Introduction (5m)

Jesus has had a long journey and is tired, but has work to do

Judea > Sychar. 30 miles, about 22 hours of walking because of rough terrain.
Tired. Weary. Had sent disciples for food.
Middle of the day - hottest. Most people would have gone home.
Jesus had work to do.

A woman from Samaria comes to the well

No one liked her, probably why she came at midday, so she could avoid everyone.

Explanation (5m)

Water that is living

What did Jesus first ask the woman to do?
John 4:7 NLT
Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.”
Unusual for Jew to speak to Samaritan, let alone man to woman he didn’t know.
Jesus didn’t do what people expected him to do!
What did Jesus say he could give the woman?
John 4:10–11 NLT
Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” “But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water?
Label: Water that is living
Woman imagined water had special powers.
Couldn’t understand what Jesus meant.
Was speaking in picture language.

Never be thirsty again

What did Jesus tell the woman she would never be if she drank his water?
John 4:14 NLT
But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
Label: Never be thirsty again
Now she really though Jesus had special powers!
Intrigued - what does it all mean?

Eternal Life

What would this living water give people?
John 4:14 NLT
But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
Label: Eternal life
Could not really understand, but she could at least see that Jesus was offering hope and new life - now and for ever.

Later on, becomes obvious that J knows all about her

The wrong decisions she’d made in life, but still offered her life-giving water.
She went and told everyone what J had said and done and what he had offered her.

Application (5m)

God loves us whilst we are still sinners

Romans 5:8 NLT
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
If we want to, we can be forgiven and have new life as his friends, both now and for ever.
Romans 5:8–10 NLT
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son.

SB 742 - When shall I come unto the healing waters?

Video: Healing Waters - ISS - 5:00
When shall I come unto the healing waters? Lifting my heart, I cry to thee my prayer. Spirit of peace, my Comforter and healer, In whom my springs are found, let my soul meet thee there. From a hill I know, Healing waters flow; O rise, Immanuel?s tide, And my soul overflow! 2 Wash from my hands the dust of earthly striving; Take from my mind the stress of secret fear; Cleanse thou the wounds from all but thee far hidden, And when the waters flow let my healing appear. 3 Light, life and love are in that healing fountain, All I require to cleanse me and restore; Flow through my soul, redeem its desert places, And make a garden there for the Lord I adore.
