Introduction

Our text today is found in the longest of the psalms. This Psalm is a mixture of a lament psalm and wisdom psalm. It is a mixture of suffering and learning of the law. Our text is a very familiar scripture. We have quoted it, preached it, sung it, I’ve even seen it on a t-shirt. God places this verse on my heart for us today. The composer says to us through the King James Version of the Bible, that “it was good for me that I have been afflicted; That I might learn they statutes. The law of they mouth is better unto me Than thousands of gold and silver.”

Background

He says that it is good for me that I have been afflicted. Well I was somewhat taken back. How is it GOOD that I have been afflicted? To afflict is to cause pain or suffering? So how is it that it is good that something came and causes pain and suffering? See the problem is that we do not look at affliction correctly. When you look at the affliction from the original text, it means to be bowed down, to be humbled. It was good that I was afflicted.
