14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you. 15 For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me. 17 For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church. 18 Now some are puffed up, as though I would not come to you. 19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power. 20 For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power. 21 What will ye? shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love, and in the spirit of meekness?
A disciple/ minister of Christ must not shame people
14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.
Paul shares his heart and the heart of a genuine minister/ disciple of the gospel.
He wrote this letter not to shame
The word shame is the Greek word entrepo that means to dishonor and to fail to respect , to belittle, embarrass, and to make a spectacle of someone.
-You see the enemy come to shame, dishonor, tear down, destroy, he wants to reveal your shortcomings, sin, wrongdoing to accuse and condemn.
The enemy wants to expose your nakeness and vulnerable like Ham did to Noah and like Paul talked about being made a spectule; the prisioner of war marched naked at the end of the precession.
22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. 23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.
True Love warns and covers and does not seek to shame others.
It is wrong to cover without warning and it also wrong to warn without covering if the person is receptive and repentive
5 Open rebuke is better than secret love.
Paul’s love led to rebuke, correction, and warning just as father warns his or her children.
Warn is the Greek word nountheteo which means to admonish, repimand, instruct, advise, lecture, counsel ,put in mind.
A minster/ disciple of Christ is like a watchman that must warn the people when they are in danger.
17 Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.
The blood is on the watchman's hand if he does not give a warning.
6 But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.
The disciple/ minister in leadership that watch for soul must give an account; therefore those that are under their care should obey- correct the course of action, be persuaded, follow, be influenced by, trust.
17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
A disciple/ minister of Christ must show a fatherly spirit, not just an instructors spirit.
15 For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.
A servant leader, minister, disciple, is one that is more that instructor/ tutor/ guide.
Instructor/ tutor/ in Paul’s day were trusted slaves a put in chagre of a child’s welfare and growth.
The a difference between a babysitter and parent
I pray that church develop more spiritual fathers and mothers.
A spiritual father show love and justice
care and discipline
interest but also self -development
giving but also demands
acceptance but also disapproval
praise but also warning
16 Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.
Is my life worth imitating?
Am I hypocritical?
Do I say one thing and do another?
A servant of God/ disciple show himself/herself as an example
Every father should strive to an example to his children.
Our lives are worth imitating when we are connected to Christ
The only Jesus some will see is you!
1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
A disciple/ servant leader of Christ should help other to grow and become leaders and examples
17 For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.
2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
