Brief Outline of Israel’s History
Brief Outline of Israel’s History
This May Be More Brief than the Questioner Intended
But if Anyone has Any Questions About Any Parts of Israel’s History…
Get Them in the Question Box and We’ll Do Our Best to Go Deeper
Chosen
Abraham was Chosen
And Through His Lineage the Rest of the World Would Be Blessed
The World will Come to Know God Through Them
He Travels to the Land of Canaan
He has Isaac
Isaac has Jacob
Jacob has 12 Sons Who Eventually All Move to Egypt…
Where Their Descendants will Become Slaves
Liberated
Israel is Delivered By God Through Moses From Slavery in Egypt
He Then Leads Israel to Mount Sinai to Receive the Law
They Then Leave Mount Sinai and Go to Kadesh-Barnea
This is Where They will Then Send Out the 12 Spies
After the 10 of the 12 Spies Bring a Bad Report…
God Curses that Generation to Die in the Wilderness
Wandering
Israel Wandered in the Wilderness for 40 Years…
Because They Didn’t Trust God to Continue Delivering Them
Victorious
Joshua Led Israel into the Promised Land
They Began to Take Possession of the Land…
And Divided the Land Up Among the Tribes
But They Didn’t Remain Faithful
So the Land of Milk and Honey Wasn’t Exactly That
Lawless
There was No King and Everyone Did What was Right in Their Own Eyes
They Rejected God as Their King…
And Lawlessness Ruled the Day
This was a Dark Period in Israel’s History
Ruled
Israel Wanted a King Like All the Other Nations
God Gave Them Saul as King
But He wasn’t Faithful
So He was Replaced By David
United
The Kingdom of Israel was United Under King David
Divided
After David’s Son Solomon, the Kingdom was Divided
Northern Israel and Southern Judah
Solomon’s Son, Rehoboam, Rules Over Judah
Jereboam Rules Over Israel
Exiled
Because of Their Unfaithfulness…
Both Kingdoms would Be Taken into Exile
Israel was Dispersed By the Assyrians
And Assyria Resettles Samaria with Other Peoples
Judah was Taken Captive into Babylon
Returned
After 70 Years of Exile in Babylon…
The New World Power, the Persians…
Allowed the Jews (People of Judah) to Return Home
But Things Still Aren’t Going Great
Waiting
After the Writings of the OT…
The Jewish People were Still Waiting for the Messiah to Arrive
First it was the Assyrians
Then the Babylonians
Then the Persians
Then Came the Greeks
The Jewish People Suffered Greatly Under the Grecian Empire
Intertestimental Books Like Maccabees Talk a Lot About that
Then the Romans Came to Power
And its Under the Roman Empire that We See the Arrival of the Messiah
That’s a Brief Outline of Israel’s History
Explain Hebrews 10:26
Explain Hebrews 10:26
Hebrews 10:26 (NASB95)
26 For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
Our English Translation, the Verse Begins with the Word “For”
“For” is an “Explanatory Conjunction”
It’s a Conjunction that Used to Set Up…
An Explanation of What was Previously Stated
So, Verse 26 is Seeking to Further Explain…
What was Being Said in the Passage Before it
That Means:
In Order to Explain Hebrews 10:26…
We Need to First Look at Hebrews 10:19-25
Hebrews 10:19–25 (NASB95)
19 Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; 24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
The Hebrew Christians Were Encouraged to Draw Near to God
Jesus has Opened Up a New and Living Way into God’s Presence…
Through His Sacrificial Death
So Now We can Draw Near with:
Sincere Hearts
Full Assurance of Faith
Cleansed Consciences
Because Jesus has Provided All of this for Us…
We Should Hold On to Our Faith/Allegiance to Him
We Need to Stimulate/Prod One Another…
To Love and Serve Each Other
It’s Our Responsibility in the Assembly to Encourage Each Other Toward These Goals
And We Can’t Fulfill These Responsibilities…
If We Continue to Forsake/Abandon the Assembly
In Our Abandonment of Our Family in Christ…
Not Only Do We Hurt Our Siblings…
By Not Fulfilling Our Responsibilities to Them
We Hurt Ourselves…
By Being Disconnected From God’s Loving, Encouraging People
We Separate Ourselves From Exactly What We Need to Keep the Faith
We Need Intimate Relationship With and Encouragement From Other Believers
That Leads Us to Our Verse
Hebrews 10:26 (NASB95)
For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
Remember the Word “For”
It Connects this Verse with the Verses that Came Before it
It is Seeking to Further Explain the Previous Verses
Willful Sin is Directly Connected to…
Abandoning Our Responsibility to Jesus and His Church
It’s Important to Understand the Verb Tense in this Passage:
To “Go On Sinning” Doesn’t Refer to the Occasional Sin
This is Something that Continues to Actively Take Place
Then We Have the Word “Willfully”/Deliberate/Intentional
What is a Willful/Deliberate/Intentional Sin?
Isn’t All Sin Willful/Deliberate/Intentional?
The Old Law Distinguished Between 2 Types of Sin
One Type of Sin Would Be Forgiven
The Other Type of Sin was to Be Punished By Death
Numbers 15:27–31 (NASB95)
27 ‘Also if one person sins unintentionally, then he shall offer a one year old female goat for a sin offering. 28 ‘The priest shall make atonement before the Lord for the person who goes astray when he sins unintentionally, making atonement for him that he may be forgiven. 29 ‘You shall have one law for him who does anything unintentionally, for him who is native among the sons of Israel and for the alien who sojourns among them.
30 ‘But the person who does anything defiantly, whether he is native or an alien, that one is blaspheming the Lord; and that person shall be cut off from among his people. 31 ‘Because he has despised the word of the Lord and has broken His commandment, that person shall be completely cut off; his guilt will be on him.’ ”
The Difference is Between Unintentional Sin and Defiant Sin
What are the Differences Between These 2 Types of Sin?
Unintentional Sin Refers to Sin Committed in Ignorance or Moment of Weakness
This is the Person Who Wants to Do What is Right, But isn’t Perfect
Defiant Sin Refers to Sin Committed in Rebellion Against God
This is the Person Who Shakes His Fist at God and Purposefully Disobeys Him
One Commentator Described it this Way:
Willful Sin “communicates the idea of willing participation in an action, something done with a clear mind and firm step”
It’s a Willing and Conscious Rejection of God
Hebrews 10:26 (NASB95)
For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
What’s Being Said in this Verse…
Is Connected to the Commands in Previous Passage
Commands Like:
Draw Near to God
Hold Onto Your Faith/Allegiance to Jesus
Contemplate Ways to Stir Up Love and Good Works
Not Abandoning the Church Gatherings
Encouraging One Another
Those Who were Failing to Keep These Commands…
Were Not Failing to Do So By Accident
They Were Failing to Do So Defiantly
They Were Intentionally Abandoning Their Allegiance to Jesus…
All that Goes with it
Who is the Person Who “Receives the Knowledge of the Truth”?
The Person Who Accepts the Gospel of Jesus
This is Referring to a Christian
What is the Result When a Christian Defiantly, Rebelliously, and Continuously Sins?
“There No Longer Remains a Sacrifice for Sins”
What Does that Mean?
Jesus’ Once for All Atoning Sacrifice is No Longer for You
You Have Rejected Your High Priest and Sacrificial Offering
Therefore, Because of Your Rebellion, You are Hopelessly Lost in Your Sin
The Rest of the Context Says:
Hebrews 10:26–31 (NASB95)
26 For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
29 How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge His people.” 31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Those Who Continue to Intentionally Sin…
No Longer Have a Sacrifice for Their Sins
But What They Do Have is a Terrifying Expectation of Judgment
Why?
Because They have Rejected Jesus
Because They Have Trampled the Son of God Under Their Feet…
And Considered His Blood as Unclean and Worthless
Anything to Add to that Explanation?
