Ephesians 4:17-21
English Standard Version
The New Life
17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,
How you walk affect your holiness
Our walk should not look like the worlds walk
walk.. way you live
Ephesians 4:17a(ESV)
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do
Ephesians 2:12-13 (ESV)
12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
How not to walk
Ephesians 4:17b-19 (ESV)
in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.
Do not walk with an empty head
futility of minds
futility means emptiness of minds.
What are you chasing this am..how are you using your steps..
Dreamhome 1-3,
2 Peter 2:17-18 (ESV)
17 These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. 18 For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error.
so what if our every step was toward God..
Jonathan Edwards said, “I think much, on all occasions, of my dying, and of the common circumstance which attend death.”
Seems bleak?
Psalm 90:12 (ESV)
12 So teach us to number our days     that we may get a heart of wisdom.
Do not walk in the dark
Darkened in their understanding
Dark forest.. slender man ..the boogie man..jason.. goat man
Darkened is in the perfect passive tense.. just means that something happened in the past that cause the current results.
This literally means our minds are the scary forests.
Living in a room with no light
John 3:19-20 (ESV)
19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
Alienated from the life of God
Do not Walk without God
1 John 1:7 (ESV)
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
In the 18th century, John and Charles Wesley and George Whitefield, along with some others, formed a club at Oxford called “The Holy Club.” Through self-denial, discipline, good works, and reading and studying their Greek New Testaments and other books, these young men sought to be holy. But it all stemmed from human effort. None of these young men were born again.
Then, George Whitefield read a little book, The Life of God in the Soul of Man, written in the previous century by a young Scotsman, Henry Scougal. Whitefield said that by that book, “God showed me that I must be born again, or be damned! I learned that a man may go to church, say his prayers, receive the sacrament, and yet not be a Christian. How did my heart rise and shudder, like a poor man that is afraid to look into his account-books, lest he should find himself a bankrupt
He came to realize that being a true Christian involves “a union of the soul with God, and Christ formed within us” (ibid.). It was the first time that he realized that he must become a new creature.
Romans 1:21 (ESV)
21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Ignorance
We get the word Agnostic from this Greek word. Which means to be without knowledge.. empty of the knowledge of God
Romans 1:20 (ESV)
20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,[a] in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
1 Peter 1:14-15
English Standard Version
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
Paul says this ignorance comes from their hardness of hearts..
Hardness of hearts
Disciples not believing mary about resurrection.
Mark 16:14
14 Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen.
1 Corinthians 2:14
English Standard Version
14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
Callous
Being past feeling
Raking leaves..painfull then after a while iit doesn’t hurt anymore
Romans 8:8 (ESV)
8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God
What emotion or sin are you callous to that in no longer causes you pain?
Oddly enough we have become callous to our mission here on earth.. To be salt and light to be Jesus to everyone we meet..
.
Stop telling the world how to live and show them
Titus 3:3 (ESV)
3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.
See the more we sin the more our body is accustomed to this sin , the less we have sorrow for this sin..
No one more than us should be able to feel the grace of the Lord each day as we have experienced through salvation.
Sensuality
McDonalds.. Big Mac.. fries.. Sweet tea
Sensual sin always leaves us disattisfied.
It is a loss of control over your desires.
God gave some of us gifts in this world. We can see things, hear things, feel things, taste things and experience things. Are we giving ourselves over to those things…
1 Peter 2:11 (ESV)
11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.
Romans 1:24 (ESV)
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,
Greedy to Practice every kind of impurity
Galatians 5:19-21 (ESV)
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy,[a] drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do[b] such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But God
Ephesians 4:20-21
20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,
Two claps and a rick flair
1 John 5:20. (ESV)
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
That is not the way you learned Christ!!
Romans 6:6 (ESV)
6 We know that our old self[a] was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
Backwards walking.. therapy
Dr. Lloyd-Jones tells us: “If my Christian living is not quite inevitable to me, if I am always fighting against it and struggling and trying to get out of it, and wondering why it is so hard and narrow, if I find myself rather envying the people who are still back in the world, there is something radically wrong with my Christian life”
Holy living is natural to a holy people. Unholiness is natural to ungodly people.
