In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Why do you think it was important for jesus to be baptized?
This moment marks the true arrival of Jesus’s earthly ministry.
Now, verse 10 says “the spirit descended like a dove” what do you think this means?
Many have over the years interpreted this as a literal dove, however, we obviously see that scripture has taught that it is the holy Spirit.
Why would the Holy Spirit be coming down in this moment?
Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations.
God’s word teaches that Jesus was chosen to be who he was and that God had put the Holy Spirit into Jesus.
We should be able to see here how special this moment was.
The Holy spirit in the form of a dove was showing that the spirit was with Jesus and would walk with Jesus in a special way.
Then to think of what comes from heaven
“You are my son; with whom I am well pleased.”
God has foreshadowed his blessing onto Jesus and on Jesus’s ministry.
and then He moves him straight into the test which in this situation is listed in scriputre
And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness.
And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.
So immideatley after learning that God is telling his son that he is pleased and his spirit will guide him Jesus begins to be tested by the devil for 40 days.
What could it mean to be tested?
To be tested biblically is to try to be led to sin.
When we say no to sin and temptationa nd we are essentially saying yes to Jesus.
While when we say yes we are really saying yes to the devil.
It is important that we remember that yes we are going to be tested.
Why does God let his people be tested?
To see if they are faithful to him.
So we all need to not throw a pity party when we are tested
“God why am I dealing with this”
I have at times in my tests thought “God why am I dealign with this”
That’s nto the way to think.
We needed to simply say no and live for Jesus.
What does it do in our life when we say no and live for Jesus?
It is simple really. it draws us to our father.
