Acts 3:9–12 KJV 1900
9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God: 10 And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him. 11 And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon’s, greatly wondering. 12 And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?

Peter Speaks in Solomon’s Portico

KJV summarizes this segment as “Peter’s second sermon”
Solomons porch
image of Solomon’s porch
According to first century Historian
Josephus, this portico was a remnant of Solomon’s temple that still remained within Herods rebuilt temple.
place - Where disciples woukd gather to learn from their Rabbi's.
John 10:23 it was here at Solomon’s porch that Jesus was surrounded by Jews that were divided on wether Jesus was a man with devils or potentially the messiah. Acts 5 The Apostles do many miraclos at Solomons porch. It was from the miracles that the disciples worked at Solomon’s porch that led to the people began to set the sick in the street for the shadows of the apostles to touch them.

Sermons were setup by experience.

Peters, first 2 sermons are set up by experience.
I think most times in modern church, we expect preaching produces experience.
Acts 2:7–14 KJV 1900
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. 12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? 13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
Acts 3:10–12 KJV 1900
10 And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him.
- Application: Remember this is the book of the Actions of the Holy Spirit.
If we would be conduits through which the Spirit could move, our services and sermons would be explaining the works that God has been doing

With all eyes on them they point to Jesus.

Acts 3:12 KJV 1900
12 And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?
We didn't do this by our own ability it was by the power of Jesus!!

Peter tightens down the screws!

And oh... by the way, since we are on that topic.(Jesus)
someone read Acts 3:15-17
Acts 3:13–15 KJV 1900
13 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. 14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; 15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.
“you killed the prince of life”. Word prince there is archegon…meaning originator, trailblazer, beginner of something.
You killed the trailblazer of life
ESV “you killed the author of life”
Man. That cuts deep!!
15 Boldly, without reservation or hesitation... Peter declares…He is alive!!!
Never was there a rebuttal offered.
-The resurrection is absolutely the most critical and bold boast of the Bible.
if the resurrection were not real the Bible is a hoax. It is the linchpin of salvation!
And Peter emphatically declares, in the face of the very ones that had witnessed his death…he is alive!!

Name dropping

Peter knows his audience
We drop names to make an impression.
> Peter was dropping names not for clout, but to emphasize just who Jesus was (and is) and to get the to realize just how dreadful their sin was.
Preaching conviction is not hatred…it opens the door to repentence…It opens the door to blessing .
I’m jumping ahead of myself a little, but look at the last part of vs. 25
Acts 3:26 KJV 1900
26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
back to name dropping…Look at the names he uses in his preaching
•Go back to Acts 2
Vs. I6 (prophet Joel) Vs. 25 David Vs. 29 David
• Now in Acts 3.
Vs 19 God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, our fathers
VS. 22 Moses

know when to let off the gas

Preaching to condemn. just emphasizing failure.
. If Simon's sermon ends in us. 16, these guys are doomed. Sin, is a heavy thing to be contronted with especially what he is accusing Them of:
- Killed the author of life
- Ignored the prophets
- Killed the servant Jesus Christ whom the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob glorified.
Man. He is not stepping on toes. He is stomping on ankles.
But then
Vs, 17 I wot (understand or know) you did it Through ignorance.
You can feel a little oxygen enter back into the room (or the portico)

VS 19 Call to action

Acts 3:19 KJV 1900
19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
Repent
Times of refreshing (Holy Ghost)
• Shall send Jesus (Though the visitation of the Holy Ghost)
John 14:16–20 KJV 1900
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. 20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
Ghost = spirit of departed one.
The call to action turns it from condemnation into conviction, which leads to conversion!
Just as back in Acts 2. Simon had preached such conviction that they were cut to the heart. But he didn’t leave them there. He gave them the opportunity to respond. Which transitioned them from cut to the heart to gladness of heart.

Choice

Vs 23 every soul that does not heed the prophet (Jesus) will be utterly destroyed from among the people.
This isn’t referring to death. It is talking about being removed from covenant. This was the greatest fear of an Israelite. Not death but to be removed from covenant.
If you reject the teachings, and the servant that was sent Jesus Christ…you will be removed from covenant.
vs. 26
Those of you that do heed the words of the prophet, the blessing of covenant is for you!
- God sent Jesus to bless you by turning you from your wicked way.
