Introduce myself and my family
Introduce Aaron, talk about his world view
he has a narrow view of the world, he has created his own, he is king of his universe
he is ruler and he has decrees and constitutions
he has big feelings, when his laws are broken he gets offended
(his brother is usually the chief law breaker)
he lashes out and has big outbursts
he tends to forget that Aaron Land resides in Mama Kingdom, and my laws are the supreme law
so i have to remind him from time to time
pecking order. he’s been here the least amount of time, including the dog
he gets so angry, but the anger is just a fruit of the problem
the root of the problem is that he is at the center of his world view
His view is not too different than mine as crazy as it sounds
I get caught up in my own world that i created
i make up unwritten laws i expect people to follow
when they break them (my husband is usually the chief law breaker)
i throw my fits.
it may look like passive aggressiveness, or just plain ol’ aggressiveness
but that is just the fruit of the problem
the root of my problem is that I am at the center of my world view
I need to be reminded from time to time,
there is someone who has been here much longer than me,
he’s bigger than me, and greater than me
who actually does reign supreme
my view needs to change
i look to God and His Word to correct my view and give me perspective
Psalm 90: A prayer of Moses, the man of God
Psalm 90: A prayer of Moses, the man of God
Background on the author Moses
MOSES. The great leader and lawgiver through whom God brought the Hebrews out of Egypt
the covenant was given to Israel through him
mediator between God and his people
it is argued this was probably written at the end of the 38 years of wandering in the wilderness.
prayer for the new generation of Israelites who will enter the Promised Land
Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.
Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
moses starts off ascribing to God the creator.
attribute (a text, quotation, or work of art) to a particular person
regard a quality as belonging to.
Thou art God.
If God is to be at the center of our view/universe, we want to seek Him out, to know of Him and know about Him
We start in His Word to see what it is His Word says about Him
God is Eternal
God is Eternal
who was, who is, and is to come
worship the majesty of God, grandeur, royal, beauty
we are far removed from the idea of royalty and kingdom
we need the spirit of God living in us to bring us to a place of awe as we study His word
God’s Powerful Act of Creation
God’s Powerful Act of Creation
God created all that exists today
He Himself said it was good
laid foundation of the earth
took nothing and spoke into the void creating life
God is Great
God is Great
Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, And You are exalted as head over all.
here david blessing the Lord in the presence of all Israel as the offerings for the temple are prepared for building
God is Perfect
God is Perfect
all-knowing, all-wise, all-loving
full of grace, full of mercy, full of justice
“All of God does all that God does” - A.W. Tozer
God is in harmony with Himself.
perfection is to be complete in your nature. if something of another nature were to be like you, it would be imperfect
give example of human baby and a calf
there is no end to His perfection, no limit to His fullness
you cannot properly compare God. We can only use “creature words” to describe Him (more/less) - A.W. Tozer
Isaiah 40:25 “To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One.”
God stands alone as God. In a column all by Himself.
You cannot G.O.A.T. God because there is no class in which He can be compared
Though we seek to understand Him we are limited, our language is limited to describe Him
You turn man to destruction, And say, “Return, O children of men.”
For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it is past, And like a watch in the night.
Man is Temporal
Man is Temporal
compared to an eternal God who has no beginning or ending, the life span of man on earth is but a vapor
granny will be 102, born in 1921, she’s lived through a lot.
19 sitting presidents,
multiple wars WW II, partition of India, Korean War, Vietnam war
inventions, computer, mobile phone, television, microwave oven, the internet
school integration in US
100 years seems like an eternity to us
She’s lived through a lot, but she’s never been on a plane. The farthest I’ve known her to have gone is Oklahoma
She never got her drivers license. She worked as a house keeper and rode the bus until she retired
what will we do with our lives, who will we live for?
You carry them away like a flood; They are like a sleep. In the morning they are like grass which grows up:
In the morning it flourishes and grows up; In the evening it is cut down and withers.
Life is like grass, changes by the night’s dew, and flourishing in the morning, is soon cut down and withereth
give background of my story
pk, raised in christian home, but not transformed
rom 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
living life for myself in the church. self-centered, self-absorbed
working hard to make my life as easy and comfortable as possible
transformation - story
as i allowed God to transform me he confronted me with things i wasn’t ready to change
bringing me out of selfishness and changing my view from myself to Him
For we have been consumed by Your anger, And by Your wrath we are terrified.
You have set our iniquities before You, Our secret sins in the light of Your countenance.
For all our days have passed away in Your wrath; We finish our years like a sigh.
The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
Who knows the power of Your anger? For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
God’s presence is holy. To enter it unclean is dangerous
God had a system in which His people could enter His presence
a cleansing ritual involving the priesthood and the scapegoat
Jesus became flesh and God laid on Him our sin as the scapegoat
We lose sight of the large chasm that Jesus bridged for us
we receive salvation and cross over the bridge but sometimes forget how we got there or forget how big it really is
that’s why we are not compelled to worship,
why we are not moved to serve,
why can spend our time in conflict with one another,
why we have no sense of urgency to do the things Jesus told us to do
Correct my View
Correct my View
So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.
we get too busy with the cares of this world and the treasures in it
we build a house on this earth made of bricks and stone when we really should just pitch a tent
“Lord, stamp eternity on my eyeballs.” - Jonathan Edwards
Let my talent and resources that you’ve given me, my time and efforts reflect the fact this is not all there is.
story of Job
even he, a man who feared God needed a correction in his view
Job got perspective when he stood face to face with his creator
“I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You.
Therefore I abhor myself, And repent in dust and ashes.”
A trip through the universe with the Almighty God corrects Job’s view
and he responds.
How shall we respond?
we repent and pray
Return, O Lord! How long? And have compassion on Your servants.
Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy, That we may rejoice and be glad all our days!
Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us, The years in which we have seen evil.
Let Your work appear to Your servants, And Your glory to their children.
with the right perspective,
we love better. we serve better, we do God-honoring things instead of self-serving things.
story about husband moving my clothes that made me mad
i am prepping for this sermon and start to think, well i should actually use these principals. i finished cooking breakfast for only myself, so i made him some too
why am i so annoyed by people, including my husband? b/c i’m selfish. i want things my way and i throw a fit when it is not. i feel like people owe me something and get disappointed when the unspoken contract is broken
who do i think i am? i have a bad perspective.
i view myself a bit to highly and lofty, and i’m not viewing others high enough
For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
who are we serving? are we serving the great and mighty God, all knowing all loving? or are we serving ourselves?
who are we filled with? are we filled with the spirit of the living God, or are we full of ourselves?
when we view God rightly, and view ourselves properly, we’ll view situations in the proper light.
Our fuse will get lengthened. We won’t get so easily offended.
We’ll be moved with compassion for others.
We’ll be in tune with God’s spirit and readily available to be used by him.
Put Me to Work
Put Me to Work
And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, And establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands.
are you worrying about the wrong stuff?
You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask.
You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
When we know God for who he truly is, we won’t be so concerned with what he can do for us, but mostly what he can do in and through us.
paul said he boast in his weakness
And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
we no longer live for ourselves
gal 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
this is why what jesus did is so powerful and necessary.
he his the bridge from holy to filthy, dirty, unrighteous deserving of eternal death. Nothing we can do. It is not of ourselves, but it is a free gift .
eph 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,”
we were enemies of God, offending him in every way, deserving of his mighty wrath and the penalty which was death.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Jesus bore the wrath we deserved. He not only took the penalty, he took upon himself the charges, so when the guilt was declared, it was declared upon him.
this is our perspective.
The awesomeness of the father and the sacrifice of the son to allow us to have this undeserved relationship with Him
How Do We Gain and Maintain the Right Perspective?
How Do We Gain and Maintain the Right Perspective?

Ingesting the Word of God
Hearing, reading, speaking, meditating, sharing

Matt 6:9-13 “Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
Hallowed by they name
ascribe to Him His greatness and holiness
Thy kingdom come
let your perfect kingdom in its perfect nature come, bringing forth righteousness, peace, and joy

Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive others
let us extend the same grace that has been extended to us
lead us not into temptation
God is faithful and promises a way out
1 cor 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
Deliver us from evil
a prayer that God will pluck us out of despair
ps 40:2-3 “He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.”
Worship
Worship
we worship- Worship is turning to God in awe, praise and joy, as his people realise how wonderful he is
one of our cure values at AL
“All of me for all of him
We admit there is one greater than us
We acknowledge God is our Lord and King. We worship because it positions Him in the right place in our lives and changes us”

Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
