The Baptism Of Jesus
The Baptism Of Jesus
Jesus came to John to be baptized
Why?
Why did John agree?
As Jesus came out of the water He prayed
V 21
Jesus was always in the habit of prayer
to communicate with the Father
here Jesus is at the beginning of His ministry
As Jesus is praying we see, or Hear the trinity
The Father is speaking from Heaven
the Holy spirit has taken the form of a dove
Jesus is coming up out of the waters of baptism
the voice from heaven says
V 22
this is what we are looking at this morning
“In you I am well pleased”
read 21-22
Pray
The Father Speaks
The Father Speaks
out of Heaven comes the mighty voice of God
the voice is speaking to the son
You are my Beloved Son
someone who is dearly loved and valued
the son is dearly loved
Agape love, unconditional love
someone who is very dear
Beloved is the highest form of love
a love that Jesus demonstrated when he subjected himself to the whipping post
a love that Jesus demonstrated when He allowed the nails to driven into His hand and feet
a love that was demonstrated when He endured the mockery of the leaders of the Jews
the ridicule of the thieves on the cross
the love that lays down his life for a friend
the Father calls His son Beloved
Jesus has done the Fathers will
Become a human embryo and lived a spotless life
now is going into the hardest part of His life
and the Father is well pleased
Jesus has just come out of baptism
Baptism
Baptism
Baptism is the separation and joining another
a physical baptism when we are dunked it is the symbolic death burial and resurrection
this baptism is the showing the world what has happened on the inside
we have looked lately the baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire
this baptism is something the God does to us
to the bride of Christ, Jesus will baptize us with the Holy Spirit
what does that look like?
what is done internally that we show the world through the dunking
in John 3 we are told that we must be born from above
our heart of stone that hates God and rebels against God is changed into a heart of flesh that loves and desires God
turn to Romans 6.
we are looking here at another baptism, where we die and are resurrected.
V 3-6 symbolically we are connected with Christ when he was on the cross
we died with Him our sin was punished
we were buried with Him
and we were resurrected with Him with a new life
V 6-11
we are now “in Christ”
“I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. And the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
we have been made righteous
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
we are the body of Christ
Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.
Sons of God
by predestining us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,
See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we would be called children of God; and we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
The Father Speaks
The Father Speaks
and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”
The Father spoke about Jesus
told us of the love and pride in His Son
How He is well pleased with Him
His beloved Son
If The Father spoke to us from the heavens could He say the same thing about us? the believers
“You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”
we have already established that we are called children of God
and we have been adopted as sons
but are we considered beloved of God?
many times Paul will call someone his beloved
but is there anywhere where God considers us beloved?
in
to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
So, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience;
the highest form of love
highly valued
“You are My beloved Son
What about the second part
in You I am well-pleased.”
we have to separate who we are / from what we do
what we do we follow our old nature
our sin nature and we sin
we don’t want to, don’t mean to . but we still do
but that is not who we are
when God looks at us, He sees our baptism with Jesus on the cross
He sees our new heart
and that we have been made righteous
He sees the fruit of the Spirit
and that we are in Christ
our life is hidden in Christ
He sees the Holy Spirit dwelling in us
so we are in God
God is in us
so getting back to our question can the Father say ? about us
“You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”
I believe there is a resounding YES
Now
that we have established that can you say to another believer, a brother or sister in Christ and say the same thing
overlook the sin, over look their struggles
look at them and see Jesus and say
this is my beloved brother in whom I am well pleased
I highly value this person
The Father can say that about them, can you?
is there a person right now that you could have trouble saying that about him/ her
Jesus has paid for that sin
why are you still holding that against them
this person is a part of the body of Christ
this is like the hand saying to the eye I hate you and I’m going to cover you so you cant see
this is why churches split
this is why people leave
we don’t love and value each other
It’s time for some soul searching and repentance
It’s time for some asking the Holy Spirit for grace to forgive
maybe your listening today and you realize that God as of right now cannot say My beloved in whom I am well pleased
because you are not a believer
you have never repented and trusted in the finished work of Jesus on the cross
you have never allowed the blood of Jesus to wash you of your sins
today is the day to call upon Jesus to save you
to symbolically take you with Him on the cross
