Introduction: Evil King Jehoram. 2 Chronicles 21:6 “And (Jehoram) walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife. And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.” 2 Chronicles 21:20 “Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. And he departed with no one’s regret. They buried him in the city of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.”
The temple was neglected before Joash’s reign. 2 Chronicles 22:10 “Now when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal family of the house of Judah.”
Joash cleaned the temple, but made the temple the site of the murder of Zechariah. 2 Chronicles 24:2 “And Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest. 2 Chronicles 24:20 “Then the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood above the people, and said to them, “Thus says God, ‘Why do you break the commandments of the Lord, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you.’ ””
We need a king whose focus is not on the building.
Jesus’ murder led to the restored temple. Luke 11:47-51 “Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. So you are witnesses and you consent to the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’ so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.”
The temple is eternally clean in Jesus Christ.
