Hebrews 12:22-23
Hebrews 12:22-23
Introduction
Introduction
The concept of having a “personal” savior in Jesus is both an important one and a misunderstood one.
What does someone mean when they say Jesus is his “personal” savior.
In this lesson we want to validate certain aspects of that proclamation but also offer some corrective to other aspects.
A Personal Savior
A Personal Savior
We will each stand in judgment for our own actions (2 Cor. 5:10; Ezek. 18:20).
We must respond individually to the gospel (Acts 2:38).
Individual knowledge of God is a prerequisite of citizenship of the kingdom (Heb. 8:8-11).
We must each make choices about questions of individual conscience (Rom. 14:4).
All of these show an increase of responsibility. But is that what is generally meant by accepting Jesus as your “personal savior?”
A Public Savior
A Public Savior
We cannot be saved apart from the kingdom (1 Pet. 2:12).
We come into a general assembly at salvation (Heb. 12:22-23).
You take on responsibilities to the King as well as your fellow citizens (Acts 2:44-47; 1 Pet. 4:8-9).
Even in questions of conscience, we think of the whole (Rom. 14:19).
The Consequences of Confusion
The Consequences of Confusion
Some believe that their faith is unique to them (2 Tim. 1:5).
Many use the “personal” to deny the “public” relationship (Heb. 3:12-13; 10:24-25; 1 Cor. 5).
There is a danger of confusion in the other direction as well.
