Israel was given new life, they were free. There were still self inflicted wounds that needed healing, sin. God healed them when they looked to Him for their salvation.

The Fiery Snake

Numbers 21:4-9 “From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.”
“And the people became impatient” “And the people spoke against God and against Moses”
Discontent
Our view of the world vs. God’s view of the world
‘Things are not the way I want them to be’
“Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people”
How do you discipline a nation?
God said He disciplines the ones He loves
Israel took their eyes off God, God had to bring them back
“We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you.”
Repentance and Confession
“Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”
Supernatural healing
Clearly God is doing the healing
Israel later worshipped the staff, 2 Kings 18:4 “He removed the high places and broke the pillars and cut down the Asherah. And he broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the people of Israel had made offerings to it (it was called Nehushtan).”
It takes coming out into the light
Don’t hide
God wanted Israel to live
God wanted what is best for Israel
He even desired that the Egyptians know Him, Exodus 14:18 “And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.””
Israel was self destructive

Jesus

John 3:13–21 ESV
No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
What is eternal life?
John 17:3 “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”
Eternal life is here and now
More than just escaping hell
Freedom from our hurts, habits, and hangups
Come into the light
We are inadequate
Fight or Flight
Jesus took your inadequacies upon Himself
Jesus strips your mortality and gives you immortality
Jesus didn’t come to condemn, He came to save
Judgment is coming later
