Intro:
This morning we are beginning a new series entitled Types and Shadows.
Over the next 4 weeks are going to be looking at types and shadows found in the Old Testament.
The are types in the Old Testament that are in essence picture language that reveal New Testament Doctrine. A type is some person, event, or ceremony that is recorded to foreshadow some future person, event, or ceremony.
In this series we are going to look at some of the Old Testament Types that foreshadow what Jesus came to do.
Today I want to begin by giving an overview of the seven main feast of the Lord along with a particular focus on the passover. Next we we are going to look at the scapegoat, and on palm Sunday we will look at the subject of atonement.
Each of these areas have deep meaning that help frame the picture of what Jesus our Messiah has done.

In the Old Testament there were Seven Main Feasts of the Lord.
Passover
The Feast of Unleavened Bread
Feast of First Fruits
Pentecost/ Feast of Weeks
Feast of Trumpets
Day of Atonement
The Feast of Tabernacles
The first four have been fulfilled, three are yet to be fulfilled. Each of these are appointed times in the scripture. Exodus 12:3-13.
Turn with me to the book of Exodus 12: 3-13. (Read it)
In this passage Israel is still in bondage to Egypt. 9 of the 10 plagues have taken place and the tenth is about to happen. This final plague will be the worst: The death of the firstborn.
During this time God institutes the passover.
There is to be a passover lamb.
It shall be without blemish.
A male of the first year.
It had to be killed.
The blood of the lamb was to be put on the two door post and the lentil of the houses.
When God would execute judgement on the land, He would see the blood and passover the house.
I want you to also notice that this feast was at a specific time and it was to be kept throughout their generations forever.
What is beautiful about this type and shadow is how Jesus fulfilled it.
In John 1:29 Jesus is revealed as our passover lamb. “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”
Jesus was without blemish (sin). Hebrews 4:15 “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
He had to be killed. Isaiah 53:10-11 “Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.”
His blood sprinkled the nations Isaiah 52:15 “So shall He sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths at Him; For what had not been told them they shall see, And what they had not heard they shall consider.”
Jesus as the passover lamb causes judgement to pass over his children. Luke 22:20 “Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”
Jesus died during passover. In Matthew 26 Jesus celebrates the passover with His disciples and is betrayed into the hands of the High Priest.

Apply:
Before Jesus is betrayed he institutes the Lords Supper. Matthew 26:26-29.
Look at Matthew 26:26-29 “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.””
The shedding of His blood brought forgiveness of Sin, but Jesus also fulfills the feast of unleavened bread. Jesus was the sinless Bread of Heaven. John 6:33-35
“For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.” And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”
Leaven in the scripture represents sin. 1 Corinthians 5:7
“Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.”
The bread reminds us that we are to live our lives without the leaven of sin that corrupts us, and to feed upon the Word of God which is the bread of life.
There is one more feast that Jesus fulfilled that we will talk more about on Easter.
The feast of First Fruits. Jesus was raised from the dead on the feast of first fruits. He was the first fruit of all who will be resurrected to eternal life.
What beauty there is in the types and shadows of the Old Testament. There is one other area that I want to briefly give an overview of and that is the temple.

Closing:
The layout of the temple was literally a depiction of the plan of salvation.
(Bring up the slide of the temple)
In the Temple:
There was only one door or entrance. Jesus said in John 10:7, I am the door.
The bronze Altar was the first thing that must be approached before entering the Presence. We have to go through the cross to boldly enter His throne room of Grace.
The Bronze Laver was where outward cleansing had to take place. I shared here recently about sanctification and how we are sanctified through the washing of the water of the word.
Inside the Holy Place was the Light of the Menorah to the left. Jesus said in John 8:12 that He was the light of the world.
On the right was the Table of Show bread. Jesus said in John 6:35 that He was the bread of life.
Immediately in front was the Altar of Incense. Jesus offered Himself up as a sweet smelling incense to the Father.
In the Holy of Holies was the ark of the covenant with the Mercy Seat. This was the throne of God where the Shekinah dwelt. (The manifested personal presence of God which took the form of a cloud.)
Between the Altar of Incense and the Holy Holies was a veil. Only once a year could the high priest go into the Holy of Holies to make sacrifice to atone for the sins of the nation. Everyone else was cut off from the presence.
Through Jesus sacrifice as the lamb of God the veil was torn in two. We now have direct access into the presence of God through the finished work of Christ. Jesus sacrificial death paved the way for us to have redemption.
In Hebrews 9:12 it says, “Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.”
Ephesians 1:7 “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace”
How beautiful is God’s Word! This is not something made up by mankind. It is a story written by the hand of God. Purposely planned out to redeem what was lost at creation.
Let’s Pray!
