(Hebrews 12:1-2)
Introduction:
1. We don’t frequently use the word, “beset” so it probably needs defining.
2. “Beset” means to ensnare, entangle, or to cling.
3. One thing we all can understand because we have experienced it, is that we all struggle with besetting sins.
4. However, we can’t just give up…our identity and usefulness to the Lord is at stake.
5. Let’s consider some things we can do to overcome these besetting sins.
I. Never Become Comfortable with Sin
A. Don’t allow familiarity to normalize the sin in your life or your walk with God.
B. Sin should not rule your walk with God. (Romans 6:14).
“For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.”
C. We need to be careful how we place sin in our life. (Psalm 66:18).
“If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear me:”
D. Let the love of God be true in your life. (Romans 12:9).
“Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.”
E. There is more evil in the least sin than in the greatest calamity.
II. Make No Provision for Sin
A. Be willing to see yourself as you are. (Romans 13:14).
B. Change your behavior and thought patterns. (Philippians 4:8; Proverbs 23:7).
C. Start doing what it takes to put God in his place in your life. (Matthew 5:29).
III. Thank God for His Love and Forgiveness
A. The more we know of God, the more we love him, and the more we love him, the less we sin.
B. Our misery with these besetting sins is overcome by Jesus Christ. (Romans 7:14-25).
Conclusion:
1. You’re not alone.
2. We all struggle with sins that beset us.
3. However, there’s hope.
4. We can do better and because of God’s love, there is forgiveness in Christ Jesus
