2 Timothy 1:1-7
Text Coming from 7th Verse
I will be reading from the American Standard Version.
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, according to the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus, 2to Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers in a pure conscience, how unceasing is my remembrance of thee in my supplications, night and day 4longing to see thee, remembering thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; 5having been reminded of the unfeigned faith that is in thee; which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and, I am persuaded, in thee also. 6For which cause I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee through the laying on of my hands. 7For God gave us not a spirit of fearfulness; but of power and love and discipline. (Sound Mind)
Dont Be Scared. God Got you!
Introduction
My Brothers and My Sisters I believe we all can agree that we are living in a day and age were we are seeing things occur in our nation as never before. School shootings are occurring, Massive shootings are occurring, Politicians seems untrustworthy, Racism and prejudice is prevalent in our communities and even on our jobs. Those in this world seems as though they live in fear and seems as though they can’t trust anyone or anything.
It’s not surprising that those who are not believers live in fear and timid. However it becomes worrisome when those who are in the Body of Christ, Those who are believers begin to live a life of fear, timidness and intimidation.
My Brothers and sisters We understand that that Fear is a tactic that the enemy uses to discourage us, to distract us and to diminish us.
If we are not careful fear will prevent us from reaching our full potential
My brothers and sisters its not accident that “Fear not' is in the Bible 365 times.
My brothers and sisters its not accident that “Fear not' is in the Bible 365 times.
This proves that Fear is not anything new, there are baby biblical references that shows examples of fear.
It was moses in exudos that God called to be the spokesperson for Israel and because his stuttering problem he was afraid but God said if you go, I'll go with you open I'm up your mouth and I'll speak for you.
The enemy attempted to use fear of fire with Shaddrack mishack and abenego when they were thrown in the fire furnace, but they wasnt fearful becuase God had them.
It was Peter that could have been fearful when Jesus bid him to walk on water .
However he begin to.walk on water because God was with him.
The enemy attempted to use the fear of Lions when he thrugh Daniel in the Lions Den. But Daniel did not rear because God had him.
It was the disciples that was on the boat when the storm arose and they became fearful and went to the bottom of the boat and woke Jesus up.
Jesus woke up spoke to the storm and storm ceased and ask the disciples why were they afraid.
My brothers sisters Just as God was with Shadrack Meshack and abednego God is with you.
Just as God was with Daniel in the lions Den, God is with you.
Just as God was with Moses, God is with you,
Just as Jesus was with the disciples he is with you.
This is encouraging to us that no matter what you do, where you go, God is with you. The Bible says that he would never leave us nor forsake us.
Deuteronomy 31:6 encourages us to Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”
Deuteronomy 31:6 encourages us to Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”
God told Abram in Genesis 15:1 Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
David said, “The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Ps. 27:1).
fear is something that everyone of have dealt with at one time or another. We can be fearful a person. We can be fearful of a place, We can even be fearful of an opportunity,
Some people are afraid to go to the grocery store.
Some people are afraid to send their children to school because they don’t know what will happen.
Some people are even afraid to walk in their call because they are intimidated by what others may have to stay.
Some people are intimidated by those who ares different from us, rather it be by their race, their wit, their age or their gift.
My Job here today is not to tell you what you are intimidated by but I would like to challenge you today, to think of the thing that have you intimidated and break the stronghold of it and approach it with a spirit of boldness!
Background of the text…It was the second letter written to timmothy that why its labled 2nd timothy… One would ask why after paul wrote one letter he would follow up with a second letter.
This was the last epistle wrote by the apostle paul, before he himself was beheaded. Christians were under great persuction during these times
Paul was writing to Timothy, his long-time coworker and dear son in the faith. The expression of affection, beyond its doubtless spontaneous and genuine nature, would serve to encourage Timothy in a difficult situation. (It may well have encouraged Paul himself, virtually alone in prison, just to write these words!)
Timothy appears in Acts 16:1 as already having become a disciple when Paul recruited him into his entourage.
Paul begins letter with a grretungs.
2 Timothy 1:2 (BBC): As in 1 Timothy, Paul’s greeting consists of grace, mercy, and peace One may ask why would Paul use these three to greet timothy in this letter.Well Guy King has suggested that grace is needed for every service, mercy for every failure, and peace for every circumstance.
Paul traces Timothy’s Christian faith to his mother, Eunice, and ultimately to his grandmother, Lois. His training in the Jewish Scriptures, however, extended to infancy (3:15).
Paul noticed dthat Timothy imitated his grandmother and his mother, and I have to pause there and say we have to be careful what we do and say around our children or our young people because, We better belive they will immitate us. However, fortunatly Timothy was brought up in the right way. Paul noticed that Timorthy had this same anointing and the same calling. However, Paul tells timothy, in other words. Your grandmother, and mother and your ancestors had a call on their life, and you have the same anointing, However because of Timothy timid spirit, he was not stirring up the gifts and using his gift to it’s full capacity. Paul tells him its not enough to have the gift it is our responsibility to stir it up.
My brothers and sisters all of us have a gift, some of us its hereditarty, some of us we just got it. Whatever the case. It’s not just enough to be gifted. We need to stir up the gift. Dont let intimidation and fear stop you from stiring up the gift and call on your life.
It may bother some people but stir it up.
It may rub some people the wrong way but stir it up....
It may take some Sacrifice but stir it up!!
Look at someone and say stir it up!!!
Paul reminds Timothy , that God has not given us a spirit of fear but a spirit of power love and sound mind.
Paul immediately had Timothy circumcised “in deference to the Jews of the area” (Acts 16:3). Presumably it was at this point or soon thereafter that a spiritual gift was given Timothy (possibly a reference to the gift of the Spirit himself) accompanied by prophecies when the council of elders and Paul himself laid hands on him (1:6; 1 Tim 4:14; cf. 1 Tim 1:18). Timothy appears several times thereafter in Acts (Acts17:14; 18:5; 19:22; 20:4) and was evidently with Paul during his original work in Ephesus (Acts 19:22). He also appears in several of Paul’s letters (Romans, 1–2 Corinthians, Philippians, Colossians, 1–2 Thessalonians, Philemon; cf. 1–2 Timothy) as a close companion and coworker of Paul. In several7.
The Bible says fear is a spirit, and guess what it says that God didn’t give it to us.
2 Timothy 1: 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Paul tells that what spirit God has not given us but he also tells us what spirit God have given us.
A spirit of Power of Love and Sound Mind
WHAT IS Spirit in Greek is Pneuma
Which is in comparison to soul—
a persons emotional dispensation considered collectively and under the by the seat of the emotional faculties
1.According to Paul we should have spirit of Power-
is in relation to every believer who have been born again. Jesus spoke to his disciples in Acts 1:8 that after that you receive the Holyghost you shall have Power. Well what is that Power, That is the power to defeat what’s been defeating you. Power to overcome what has a stronghold on you. Power to overcome what has intimated us. Power to overcome be free. You can fill in the blank of what you need that power to accomplish.
By seeking to discuss the subject of power, we are not attempting either to probe into the realms of political philosophy or social ethics. Instead, what we are simply trying to do is ‘to reconstruct [within the realm of biblical studies] something of the world of thought in which Paul’s mind was at home’.
Therefore, our use of powers is without any political undertone in the sense of the exercise of authority depicting the ruler and the ruled in a civil context.
He is speaking of Power in a spiritual sense. Power over who one may ask. It’s the power to defeat and gain victory over satan.
Yes my brothers and sisters we must understand that if we are going to have power over the devil we must first know that he exists.
If Satan finds any human beings sinning against God (Job 1:6–12; 2:1–7), he can quickly bring up a charge against them before God. In 1 Chronicles 21:1, Satan ‘stood up against Israel, and moved the heart of David to number Israel’. Again, the function of Satan is that of an adversary, moving the heart of David to act contrary to the will of God. In Zechariah 3:1–2, Satan stood to oppose Joshua, the high priest. In these three instances, Satan functioned in the capacity of an adversary, trying to oppose man, or preventing him from operating in accordance with the will of God.
The devils’ Job is to oppose us and distract us from reaching our purpose. If he cant use fear he will to outwit us as he did in the Garden with Adam and eve…
However the bible said…lest satan should get an advantage of us, we are not ignorant of his devices.
One may ask how can we oppose the strategies ans devices…my brothers and sisters the only way you are going to get powe’re over the enemy is in the spirit…..
Scripture says and after you receive the holyghost ye shall receive power..
We have more to fight with than Adam and Eve, they were created in the image of God. The Holyghost had not come yet…
in the present world, Satan has been stripped of his power in the arrival of Christ (Luke 11:20). In the view of Ladd, ‘This again is obviously symbolic language asserting that the presence of the power of the Kingdom of God on earth in the person of Jesus and his disciples meant the toppling of Satan from his place of power.’ Therefore in the meantime, the final doom of Satan is expected at the second coming of Christ, when his power will be lost forever.
-very significant for our present discussion in that it sheds great light on the origin of the powers and principalities
The powers and principalities therefore, can be simply defined as fallen angels who have been expelled from the presence of God, but who are now in direct spiritual confrontation with the Kingdom of God.
We are constantly fighting these same spirit of Darkness…
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
However, in luke Jesus told his disciples
Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.
That’s the Power that Paul was referring to.. The power over the enemy..
Power to win in the spirit…
Power over every though the enemy has put in your mind.
Look at somebody and say God has given you the spirit of power…
Not only has God given us a spirit of Power but
1.According to Paul we should have a spirit of Love-
Timothy could have easily been swayed to dislike or have strife against those who were beheading the Christians in ______. He could have easily been persuaded to act in revenge and attempt to get payback on those who had captured his spiritual father PaLu. However, Paul still advises Timothy to still walk in LOVE.
My brothers and sisters it’s easy to Love those who are kind nice and shows love to you, However, I believe I’m talking to some people who had to show love to those who you know didn’t like you. I’m talking to those who have had to show love to those you know have talked about you behind your back. I’m talking to some people that have to show love to those who you know dont mean you know well.
That’s the truth test of your faith when you can show love to them kind.
Jesus stated in John 13:35 by This shall all men know that you are my disciples because you have LOVE for one another.
as a matter of fact 1 john 4:8 states that he that liveth not knoweth not God, for God is love.
In 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there beknowledge, it shall vanish away.
In other words when we have the a mind of love we can not lose because love never fails.
1 John 4:17-18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
—1 John 4:17–18
When we think in Love, our thoughts process is full of pure motives on our end….
KJV says Discipline-How could one say a sound mind and the other say discipline......
Its confirmation that it takes discipline to keep a sound mind
3.Lastly according to Paul he says we should have a sound mind-
This sound mind that was Paul was speaking of was to encourage Timothy that even though everything around him looked as though it was crashing Timothy would not lose his mind.
During this time Paul was in prison and he was writing this letter during the time that Christians were being imprisoned. Christians were being killed just because they believed in christ. Paul’s Purpose was to encourage Timothy that he should not worry or lose his mind. That even when everything around him looked CRAZY HE was going to have sound mind. How many can attest to that fact that if you keep your mind on Jesus he will keep your mind. Isaiah 26:3 states that he will keep you in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on him. because he trusteth in you.
Paul’s primary purpose was to encourage Timothy to stir up the Gift and not be intimidated by the culture or those around him. To encourage him not to be timid and scared. To have Power and Self Control in the midst of it.
I come to encourage you not to walk in fear, I come to encourage to accomplish and fulfill all that God has in store for you. I come to encourage you to have the courage and boldness to approach and defeat that thing that once had you intimidated or have you intimidated even now. I come to speak a word of deliverance to those who are dealing with a spirit of fear and intimidation.
Philippians 4:6-8
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
You have to have the boldness to conquer the very thing has you defeated. What we refuse to address we will never conquer! We can never get free from the thing that has us down if we are fearful by the very existence of it!
So let’s just look at how Fear affects us.
1. It cripples us from reaching our full potential
In the gospel Mark 10:46 there was a man by the name of Blind Bartamues. He heard of Jesus coming to town. When he got into reach of Jesus he cried out Jesus thy son of David have mercy on me.
Those around him told him to be quit. attempting to make him fearful However he understood that if he would let the crowd intimidate him he would never reach his full potential and receive his sight. He cried out louder. Jesus they son of David have mercy on me. Jesus heard his cry and he received his sight.
In this season we can’t allow fear to stop us from crying out to God.
He went even harder after he faced opposition.
We are faced with opposition right now your true value comes out when you face opposition.
Don’t let opposition stop your progress.
Go harder in your family, your business, in your church
Prayer harder in this season. Don’t be quite
When you know God have given you a gift sometimes opposition comes to you to cause you to be quiet.
If blind bartamaues would have been intimidated by opposition he never would have got what God had for him.
2.It gives that which has intimated us or made us fearful the Power to control us.
If we are not careful we will allow the fear and intimidation in this season to control our emotions, give us anxiety stress us out and even have us depressed.
However, I’ve learned that it’s better to focus on your God instead of the problems, Because believe it our not our God is bigger than this problem our God is bigger than this Virus.
The Bible says he will keep you in perfect peace who mind is stayed on him.
That’s why some people can look at some you and wonder how and why your not stressed. It’s because our mind is stayed on him.
I’m going to take the precautions.
But I’m not going to be intimidated.
I’m going to wash my hands but I’m not going to be intimidated. Why because the Bible said that Hod has not given us the spirit of fear.
I know y’all saved and you don’t watch these type of movies, But a while back there was a movie that was out called Friday. In this movie there was a character by the name of D-Boo. D-Boo used the intimidation to bully those around him. He was a big man. He would walk up to people in the movie and take their necklaces their biclycles. He had the power to control everyone around him. Until a character by the name Craig that decided he was tired of being bullied by the enemy and he knocked D-Boo out.
Is there anyone in her tired of devil taking from you. Tired of the enemy holding you back. Tired of the enemy making you feel insecure it’s time to knock intimidation out.
Im not going to be intimidated by what Im going through but Im going knock it out.
It’s time to knock depression out. Its time to knock out Sickness It time to knock Low-Self esteem out. It’s time to knock fear out. It’s time to knock what it is out.and stir up the gift that God has placed in you.
3.Intimidation forces us to focus on our negativity instead of our positive
When God called Moses to speak to the children of Israel through the burning bush. He was intimidated. The first thing he did was focus on his weaknesses.
He said Israel would not believe that God appeared to him out of all people.
He had all of these strengths.
God had showed Moses all of the signs that he changed Moses rod into a serpent. His hand mad Leprous and restored it.
But Moses did not focus on these he focused on his weaknesses He had a speaking problem he was a poor speaker. However God told him you go I’ll take care of the speaking
In other words stir up the gift……
Don’t be fearful.
Summary
It cripples us from reaching our full potential
\It gives that which has intimated is the Power to control us.
Intimidation forces us to focus on the negative instead of the positive
Closing:
It was Abraham that wasnot scared when he took his son Issac for a sacrifice, Because God was with him,
It was Jesus that could have been fearful when they ran out of wine..But ratheresbhe stired up the gift when he turned water to wine..
For had him.
It was David that could have been fearful when he was faces with Goliath.
However, he stired up the gift,
When he for his slingshot and defeated Goliath with 5 stone's
It was the woman with the issue of blood who could have been fearful when the crowd was around Jesus. However she stirred up her gift and pressed her way to Jesus and touched the hem of his garment, because God was with her.
It was Blind Bartameus that could have been fearful when the crowd told him be quiet. However, he stirred up the gift and cried and Jesus thy son of David have mercy on me and received his sight.
Alter Call
Fear and timidity is a spirit and it’s not of God!
You don’t have to be intimidated by anyone else’s Personality,
You don’t have to be intimidated by anyone else’s gift.
You don’t have to be intimidated by anyone else’s gift.
