LUKE 7 The Sinful Woman

INTRODUCTION
We like to have exclusive clubs; we like exclusivity; we like to be a part of clubs that not everybody can be a part of
iPhone vs Android Debate
Android users - know why they love android
the specs, the data, the research
iPhone users - just like having an iPhone because it’s not an Android
We get the blue texts, not the ugly green ones
I want that job, that house in that neighborhood
Who doesn’t want to fly first class?
How we view ourselves determines the way we view others
Overview of Bible Story
Jesus is in the home of a Pharisee to eat a meal
A Sinful woman heard this and had to get to Jesus
She knelt, weeped at his feet and anointed his feet with oil, wiping it with her hair
Breaking all sorts of cultural customs
She breaks into this house
Interrupts the meal
Anointing - Hair undone was promiscuous
Simon, the Pharisee, said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!”
He judges not only the woman and her failures
He judges Jesus - “if this man were a prophet”
Jesus responds to this thought with a parable in verses 40-42
If Jesus says, “I have something to say to you” - you know you messed up!
Differently indebted, equally insolvent
50 days work vs 500 days work
2 months salary vs 1.5 years salary
Different amounts, but NEITHER could pay their debts
Forgiveness doesn’t mean much when we don’t think we’re guilty
Ideas:
“it’s not about what you’ve done, it’s about who you are going to”
People look at what you’ve done, but God sees what you are doing
Simon the Pharisee’s said, “IF this man WERE a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner”
He knew religion, liturgy, temple worship and the law
He knew about the things of God, not God the Father
Simon’s problem was that he thought he was better than he was and he misunderstood the nature of God
Luke 7:47 “Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.””
“SHE LOVED MUCH” - real love comes from a deep awareness of our sin and His love for us
Simon essentially invited Jesus into his house without welcoming him into his life
