What do we mean when we say the Work of Christ?
What are some things that Jesus did?
The greatest act of Jesus, and the one which all of the others are founded on is His incarnation, death, resurrection, and ascension.
We find this laid out in a very concise way in Philippians 2:5-11
Philippians 2:5-11
5-
What we have in this passage, is the apostle Paul telling us to examine ourselves, and telling us to have a mind like Christ.
The point of this passage is humility.
6-
Here we begin to see the work of Jesus put on display, and it begins before the foundation of the World.
Christ being in the form of God, decided not to hold onto this equality with Him.
Does this mean that Jesus stopped being God? No, it is referring to the glory and honor that Christ deserves.
Jesus though deserving all the glory and honor, instead laid that aside for a time, in order to fulfill God’s plan to redeem mankind.
7-
So how’d he lay it aside? By first taking on the form of a servant being born in the likeness of man.
The God of the universe came and was born a baby, the weakest and most frail creature.
He lived as a man to serve.
Who was it that Jesus was serving? It was the Will of God that Jesus submitted to.
8-
This humiliation went even further as Christ humbled Himself to the point of death.
The King of the Universe submitted Himself to death to save a lost people and appease the wrath of God.
Christ as creator came into His creation and died to redeem it.
What’s more is He didn’t just died, but died on a cross.
Crucifixion is one of the most grueling forms of death ever practiced, but beyond that in Galatians we see it referenced that anyone who dies on a tree is cursed.
Christ dying on the cross, is the single greatest act of humiliation in history, as God Himself came and died on a cross and became a curse to save people like us.
9-
The work didn’t end there though, as God exalts Him and has declared Him Lord over all creation.
Everything has been given to Him and Christ now reigns as Lord, and will one day return cementing His victory.
10-11-
We see that in the end everyone and everything will bend the knee to the question is simply a matter of location.
This does not mean that everyone will be saved, but it instead means that all will know who it is that is King, the question is will you be apart of His Kingdom or will you be cast out.
Christ has come and died to satisfy the wrath of an almighty God and to redeem lost mankind to Himself.
He is the only entry way.
Small group questions:
1- What are some ways that we can live with the humility that Jesus demonstrates?
2- What are the things/ ways we let our pride get in the way, and prevent us from serving God?
3- How does Jesus coming as a servant, model serving God to us?
