I. God’s Will

A. The meaning of God’s will :

1. God’s sovereign will

Isaiah 14:24 ESV
24 The Lord of hosts has sworn: “As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand,

Matthew 22:37 ESV

Matthew 22:39 ESV
39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

B. The Nature of God’s will

Philippians 2:13 ESV
13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
1 Thessalonians 4:3 ESV
3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality;
2 Corinthians 6:14 ESV
14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?
Matthew 7:21 ESV
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Philippians 1:6 ESV
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Jeremiah 29:11 ESV
11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

C. Response to God’s will

Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
1 Peter 4:19 ESV
19 Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.
James 4:13–15 ESV
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”
Ephesians 5:17 ESV
17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Deuteronomy 29:29 ESV
29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
Deuteronomy 11:1 ESV
1 “You shall therefore love the Lord your God and keep his charge, his statutes, his rules, and his commandments always.

Proverbs 2:1–11 ESV
1 My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, 2 making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; 3 yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, 4 if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; 7 he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. 9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; 10 for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; 11 discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you,
