Fundamentals of the Faith...
We have been called in the past a Fundamental Baptist Church. I don’t use that phrase as often as I use the phrase Independent Baptist Church. Primary, because the issue of the Fundamentals has become less and less poignant in our time. Sadly, the phrase Fundamental has been thrown around so much that there are some that think the Fundamentals are the women don’t wear pants and you only sing hymns. These are not the fundamentals of the Faith.
But there are some basic foundations for our beliefs and I think it important that we don’t just assume we are something without understanding what we believe. So I wish to deal with the first of the five Fundamentals tonight and in the weeks ahead unpack the teaching from Scripture that make up the “Fundamentals”
The disciples knew exactly what was being spoken here. Jesus looked to them and explained that he had not seen this kind of faith among the Jews. The disciples understood this because they themselves were under the authority of Jesus. They were those given under authority.
We believe in the Authority and the Inerrancy of Scripture.
They had witnessed his authority to teach
For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
They had witnessed his authority to forgive
And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house. But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
They had witnessed his authority over creation.
And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!
They witnessed a different source of authority.
And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?
He claimed all Authority
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
They were able to participate The authority of Jesus Christ.
For the work of sharing in the labor of the one in authority.
And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
With the purpose of claiming that authority when he ascended and no longer needed this authority. Or when the need came to diversify authority.
Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
So we come to this place where we ask the question from whence comes the authority of God’s Word. Why is it that we are so narrow minded as to think that this book has and should have authority over the beleiver. We get to it because God’s Word (including Christ’s Words) are authoritative.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
Christ’s claim for authority comes as one that will be recieved from our text.
The Authority of God’s Word only benefits the one who will place their faith in it.
2. The Authority of God’s Word was not limited by Jesus or the Disciples.
The centurion had great faith, but could not have believed enough. For God’s Word is immensely more powerful that we can possibly believe it for.
3. The Authority of God’s Word was a timeless application.
Is Gods’ Word still authoritative today? 12
His Word is in control unto the day of final Judgement. And beyond that for: Forever Oh lord thy word is settled in Heaven.
Is God’s Word authoritative anywhere?
That was the point of this man’s faith. You don’t have to come to my house you can say it from here and it will be done. Jesus said there was coming a day when man would worship God not based on which mountain they were standing on but by Spirit and Truth. I have his Spirit and we have the truth.
Is God’s Word authoritative for anyone? 11
You and I are the ones that come from the east and the west and have been given a place in the kingdom of God. Anyone that tells you the Gentiles were an after thought to the Gospel are lying to you. The Gentiles were the plan from the beginning.
So what of the Dispciples Authority?
We have been given an Authority… To win souls
It is the Same as the disciples…
Wait Preacher the Apostles had authority to write Scripture.
Right but remember where they get that authority.
Remember where Jesus Got His Authority - Father
Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
There was no doubt in the mind the disciples that gathered that day they were under Christ’s authority.
They spoke with authority themselves.
That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
Because they Spoke the Word of God.
There is a heresy where people are running around with this authority and that authority commanding disease and demons. This is a foolishness of the highest order. There was no misunderstanding with the disciples who their authority lie with. It is in the Word of God.
The Fundamentals of the Faith begin when we give full acknowledgment to the only authority of the Faith and the Practice of the Believer.
