Genesis 37
Joseph's life teaches us what God can do with a person who trusts Him consistently in the face of adversity. The outstanding characteristic of Joseph's life was his faithful loyalty to God. He believed God's two revelations to him in dreams (37:5-7, 9), even though God's will did not seem to be working out as he thought it would. Patient faith and its reward shine through the story of Joseph. The Lord Jesus supremely illustrates this quality of faith.
Joseph was one of 12 sons of Jacob..
Uncle laban WORKS 7 YEARS LEAH..
Order of birth
Rachel dies having Benjamin
Joseph’s father is refrred to by two names: Jacob and Israel. Jacob is the son of Isaac and the Grandson of Abraham. God made covenant promises to Abraham and Isaac and their descendants..
This story is how God fulfilled one of those covenants to give Abraham many generations.
It has been said that In
Abraham God’s power
Isaac God’s provision
Jacob God’s purpose YY
Joseph God’s Plan
Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
This story is about faith when facing different waves of the world but it is also about divine providence a proof that what man intends for evil, that whatever you are facing God has a plan and will purpose all things for good.
Dan Anderson said, “ God doesn’t save us from trouble, he saves us when we are in trouble”
Isaiah 43:2 (ESV)
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.
Make a wave of faith realize
Life is unfair
Genesis 37:2-4 (ESV)
Joseph, being seventeen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father. 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors. 4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him.
Looney tunes
Picked up Ace from school.. two kids at the high school driving camaros.. some people are born beautiful some born. With money, some work hard and seem to have things fall apart , some born in countries that are conatantly at war… gas prices are unfair.. tell that to the foks in Ukraine..
Ecclesiastes 9:11 (ESV)
11 Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.
Fairness, properly defined, is “freedom from bias, dishonesty, or injustice.” To be fair is to be just; that is, to be “guided by truth, reason, and justice.”
So the only one who could ever be fair is God himself.
But he requires us to make this world more fair
Micah 6:8 (ESV)
He has told you, O man, what is good;     and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness,     and to walk humbly with your God?
Make a wave of faith rid yourself of
Jealousy and Hate
Genesis 37:5-11 5 Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers they hated him even more. 6 He said to them, “Hear this dream that I have dreamed: 7 Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright. And behold, your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf.” 8 His brothers said to him, “Are you indeed to reign over us? Or are you indeed to rule over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.
9 Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, “Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” 10 But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves to the ground before you?” 11 And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.
Anger Cycle-
Find fault in others instead of looking at ourselves first
Contagious
Begin to regocnize others as less then people and more as problems
We shut down
We become numb
Proverbs 27:4 (ESV)
Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming,     but who can stand before jealousy?
Hebrews 13:5 (ESV)
5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Make a wave of faith be
Obedience
Genesis 37:12-14 (ESV)
12 Now his brothers went to pasture their father's flock near Shechem. 13 And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers pasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” 14 So he said to him, “Go now, see if it is well with your brothers and with the flock, and bring me word.” So he sent him from the Valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. 1
They were in Shechem. It was here that Simeon and Levi had murdered an entire village to avenge the rape of their sister Dinah, Gen. 34:1-31. Surely there was anger in that region and Jacob feared for their safety.
He asks Joseph to go check on his brothers alone
Joseph goes.. I mean knowing this I could come up with a million reasons. The tug to give to a homeless person
1 John 5:2-3 (ESV)
2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
When God speaks, we should respond humbly and immediately to carry out His will. Nothing demonstrates our love for Jesus any more than out willing obedience to His will,
Charles Spurgeon once said Obedience is the highest practical courage.
Top gun illustration “its not the plane it’s the Pilot”
Trust is knowing it but obedience is doing it.
Make a wave of faith we are called to be
Devoted
Genesis 37:15-17 (ESV)
15 And a man found him wandering in the fields. And the man asked him, “What are you seeking?” 16 “I am seeking my brothers,” he said. “Tell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock.”17 And the man said, “They have gone away, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.
Proverbs 3:5 (ESV)
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,     and do not lean on your own understanding.
Here Joseph literally goes the extra mile..
During covid and this season ..ukraine.. the staff..
Matthew 5:40-42 (ESV)
40 And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.
Matthew 13:12 (ESV)
12 For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
God is good..

Examine
Genesis 37:21-28 (ESV)
But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying, “Let us not take his life.” 22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him”—that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father. 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. 24 And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.
25 Then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. 26 Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 27 Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers listened to him. 28 Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.
When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he tore his clothes 30 and returned to his brothers and said, “The boy is gone, and I, where shall I go?”
The got 100 bucks for their brother..back then this was the price for a slave who was hurt in someway ..the clearance price
Rueben was the oldest
In dealing with anger the first thing to do is identify the problem…
Judah was the 4th born of all the kids…
Disperses the guilt
Examine yourself…
2 Corinthians 13:5 (ESV)
5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
Galatians 6:4
But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor.
Do you have the Holy spirit in you are you patient gentel do you have self control, joy kind
Are you willing to pray
Psalm 139:23-24 (ESV)
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!     Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,     and lead me in the way everlasting!
If we are gonna make a wave of faith
Confession
Genesis 37:31-36 (ESV)
31 Then they took Joseph's robe and slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. 32 And they sent the robe of many colors and brought it to their father and said, “This we have found; please identify whether it is your son's robe or not.” 33 And he identified it and said, “It is my son's robe. A fierce animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn to pieces.” 34 Then Jacob tore his garments and put sackcloth on his loins and mourned for his son many days. 35 All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted and said, “No, I shall go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” Thus his father wept for him. 36 Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard.
(sins of the father) Ironically, this man Jacob, who relied on so many tricks and even deceived his own father Isaac by wearing goatskins, is now himself deceived by his sons who also use a goat. In a real sense, he was reaping what he had sown.
An article written by Menthal health counselor Jin Chung. When we do not confess it leads to isolation, depression, irrational and intense hatred addiction and sorrow.
Failing to resolve our guiilt it has a cascading effect of de-creation. God designed us to right live in a secure loving relationship with him. We are literally forfeiting the very oxygen of our creators love
Micah 7:19 (ESV)
19 He will again have compassion on us;     he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our[a] sins     into the depths of the sea.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.[a] The old has passed away; behold, the new has come

Romans 8:28 (ESV)
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Psalm 31:24 (ESV)
24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage,     all you who wait for the Lord!
Sometimes we have to wait for the right wave to take and while we wait we get hammered by a wave know and then
Sometimes we take waves we desire instead of the one’s God would have for us..
Remember there would never be a resurrecting with out Christ’s death even Christ faced adversity like us.. like Joseph.. and def more ..
We need to shout from the rooftops the love we have for jESUS WIITH FULL FAITH AND OBEDIENCE.
