Prince of Peace adult version
Isaiah 9:6 (ESV)
For to us a child is born,     to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder,     and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,     Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His name shall be
Nicknames.. missions trip.. it was a either a name that described a quality about them or a silly name that really made no sense.. my wife and her best friend where twist and shout. My dad was Scooter.. he was a mechanice always fixed stuff. And of course I was… Joe mamma
What would describe you? What nickname would your friends give you.. stress betsy.. overworked olly… mad maddy… Richy Rich?
Before he was even born Jesus was given these names
Wonderful Counselor!
Mighty God
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace!
Isaiah 9:7 (ESV)
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace     there will be no end,
Jehovah shalom
The Hebrew word for peace is Shalom .. calm and tranquility
(separate slide)Shalom To be complete, to be whole.. the state of calm without anxiety or stress
The Greek work Eirene .. unity and accord Paul uses this word to talk about the church and its oneness in Christ
What is your peace?
Beach pic
First sip of coffee in the am
Quiet house
So what is cool about peace it’s the unity through Jesus in how we are restored to God.
Our approach to Peace
Luke 2:1-7 (ESV)
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn
The first Christmas was hectic.. the normal routine was completely thrown out.. Mary and Joseph had to travel a long way, they didn’t even have reservations at the local Hyatt..
Some of us celebrate Christmas the same way..
Its like the family Christmas party..
our approach of Christmas is out of control, we spend money we do nott have,, we over exteedn ourselves and our commitments, we are reminded of just thow crazy our life really is..it seems like our short comings are magnified.. why. Because we want to be happy.. we want peace..
we look to the world for peace the perfect place to stay.
The perfect place to live. Putting all the right things around us.. the right car the right job. The right spouse..
We put our kids in all the right sports programs and put all the things so they can be successful
All in the name of happiness or what might bring us peace. Money popularity appeasing our feelings
Fear to Peace
Luke 2:8-14 (ESV)
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest,     and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
What is fear.. its really the unknown isn’t it
Why don’t you have peace?
Sin, shame and guilt
Separation from God
Psalm 34:14 (ESV)
Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
Psalm 119:165 (ESV)
165 Great peace have those who love your law;     nothing can make them stumble.
Living a life of peace
Luke 2:22-24 (ESV)
And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”
Peace comes in finding Jesus and following him …doing all he has asked..
Why Jesus? Why is this story of him being born a virgin so important.
Hebrews 4:15 (ESV)
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Because he came humbly
Because he experienced our temptation.
Because he did not sin
Find yourself a bible and read all the words of Jesus, how he handled difficult situations, how he got angry but didn’t sin, how he loved people others hated, how on his last day on earth he spent his time washing feet and praying how when he could of brought the earth to an end, he choose to die for you and me instead.
These things set him apart.
Jimi Hendrix once said
When the power of love overcomes the love of power.
The world will know peace!
This happened on the cross.. and you can know peace if you know Jesus..
Luke 2:14 (ESV)
14 “Glory to God in the highest,     and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!
Some of us understand this married.. kids.. bosses..
We do things in our relationships to keep the peace..
So how do we know if God is pleased with us and we are at peace with him.
Stop trying to make your on peace it only leads to fear and anxiety.
Romans 8:7-8 (ESV)
7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Dwight L. Moody
A great many people are trying to make peace, but that has already been done. God has not left it for us to do; all we have to do is to enter into it.
Heres the deal there is only one thing you can do that pleases God…swes give your whole life to Jesus..
Romans 10:9-10 (ESV)
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
First way to peace and pleasing God is confessing with youor mouth that jesus is Lord
If you know Jesus and nothing about your life has changed, you have yet to know Jesus.
John 14:15 (ESV)
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
John 14:27
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
2 Peter 3:14 (ESV)
14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting, be diligent to be found by Jesus without spot or blemish, and at peace.
