Read Mark 15:1-20
1 And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate. 2 And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.” 3 And the chief priests accused him of many things. 4 And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” 5 But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.
6 Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. 7 And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. 8 And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. 9 And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. 12 And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” 14 And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
16 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.

Pilate starts with a questions
Are you the king of the jews
A question that could lead to death
the answer
You have said so
Its not a yes so as to avoid persecution
Its not a no
Instead its an acknoldegment that even those who dont know or care about Jesus will eventually acknowledge who he is
Pilate is amazed at his reaction
A reaction promised in Isaiah 53:7
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he opened not his mouth.
A reaction that only the true messiah would have
He looks at Jesus and sees something different
But how does he respond?
12 And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” 14 And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
Pilate seeking to satisfy the crowd...
He went along with it
Have you seen something different in Jesus but just went with the crowd because it was easier?
The Crowd
The Crowd
What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.”
this is the crowd that 6 days earlier cried hosanna glory to God in the highest
The crowd that worshiped Jesus just 6 days earlier
The crowd that has followed him around
The crowd that has seen his miracles
The crowd that has been in awe of his teaching
Teaching as one who has authority not like the scribes
The crowd that should have no doubt in their mind about who this Man is
Yet they shout crucify him
They shout give us the murderer
Why???????
Because this wasnt the messiah they thought they were going to get
So they shout to crucify him because he didnt fit in their box
They would rather have the murderer in their midst than the savior
How often do we choose the murderer because Jesus isnt who we thought he should be
The soldiers
The soldiers
16 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.
These are men who DON'T Care who Jesus is they just mock him,
you all have met these soldiers they use the names of Jesus but just to mock him

The unrighteous for the righteous
Barabbas is a man we dont know much about
We dont know how he responded to all of this
An innocent man will die in his place
Barrabbas the man who deserved to die will be realeased so that Jesus can be crucified
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,
this what Jesus will accomplish on this cross
we may be the crowd shouting crucify but Jesus looks on this crowd and will say father forgive them for they know not what they do
when we look a realize what Jesus has done for us how we deserve death but Jesus stands in as substitute in our place we are given an opportunity to exchange our unrighteousness with his righteousness
jesus Will i forced on our behalf father forgive _______ she/he can have my righteousness
they stepped out of the crowd to call upon me and I know them I will die for them.
