2 Timothy 3:1–5 (KJV 1900)
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
Traitor = (in the sense of giving forward into another’s [the enemy’s] hands); a surrender: - betrayer, traitor.
oath breaker
Say one thing and do another
Present themself as a friend but betray you
If a relationship demands loyalty but pressure ensues then they will walk out on you in the last days
Marriage is home building it is not a vehicle for personal pleasure or self gratification
We will find out who is committed to Christ
Who are committed to friends
Who are committed to brothers and sisters in Christ
As the last days approach churches will have conflict
The world will not continue to put up with our message
We are now the minority as christians in this nation.
People begin to get nervous when they realize they are a minority, they begin to think there must be something wrong with the faith if there are so few believers.
The problem is the world does not like Jesus
The issue is the world does not like the idea of standing accountable to God.
In these perilous times we’ve been studying, the spirit will be a shallow uncommitted attitude towards their relationships; toward their family; toward their countrymen.
The world promotes this attitude
There is an innate human nature of self preservation - this is a very strong desire - God put it there for a reason but it is a carnal drive that must be moderated.
2. another very strong natural drive is a desire for acceptance
These are both strong drives but God calls us as His children to a higher purpose
Matthew 22:36 KJV 1900
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Mat 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
God gave you another nature to accomplish this higher calling
1 Peter 1:4 KJV 1900
4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
An ability to prefer others
A power to love
A power to put others first
Children loving parents
Parents sacrificing for children
Brothers and sisters in Christ, helping one another in the church
Marriages are hindered by selfishness
People go into relationships with what is in it for me instead of what are my responsibilities
Marriage is about building a home
Investing in my wife
Investing in my children
Marriage is a ministry of service and building
Beauty is temporary
Ephesians 5:28–29 KJV 1900
28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
View your wife with the same love you have for yourself
Mat 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
The golden rule this is called
Why God knows you love you - treat others that way
Galatians 5:14 KJV 1900
14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
James 2:8 KJV 1900
8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
The royal law = preeminent: - king’s, nobleman, royal.
Are you loving like you love yourself?
What happens when we don’t love others? We become traitors.
I love our church - we are like family
The spirit of a traitor
Heady = falling forward, that is, headlong (figuratively precipitate): - heady, rash [-ly].
Given over to violence, recklessness
Out of control temperament
High minded = to envelop with smoke, that is, (figuratively) to inflate with self conceit: - high-minded, be lifted up with pride, be proud.
τυφόω tuphoō toof-o'-o from Greek typhon (a "monster")
Self sufficient and arrogant
The focus is on self more than others
We are living in an age when how a person feels on the inside is said to be more important than facts
We are told we are a bigot or insensitive if we say a person that identifies as the opposite gender is suffering from a mental, emotional, or spiritual problem
We are called to in humility cultivate relationships
Teaching children to value relationships
Children are being taught how they feel is the most important part of their life - that is nonsense
We will see the results of a self consumed narcissistic generation and it will be monstrous
Teaching children to be kind, personable, cultivating relationships
Teaching our children to value the older individuals in the church
1 Timothy 5:1 KJV 1900
1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
1 Timothy 5:2 KJV 1900
2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
Love and respecting adults
other brothers and sisters in Christ
Heady and High minded will rob of the joy and the blessings of relationships
Our children need other relationships in the church
We need relationships in the church
A spirit of this heady, highminded attitude can creep into the church, we must be careful
The world has no right to teach our children relationships
The heady and highminded are not only destructive they will be destroyed God’s word says
Pride = arrogancy, excellency (-lent), majesty, pomp, pride, proud, swelling.
Proverbs 16:18 KJV 1900
18 Pride goeth before destruction, And an haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 29:23 KJV 1900
23 A man’s pride shall bring him low: But honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.
The spiritual warfare that we are in takes place in our mind
The evil one wants to deceive us to think that our feelings are preeminent, our comfort is the most important, and that mindset leads to a traitorous, self-centered pride that destroys relationships.
Self centered pride
“Lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God”
The idea that we cannot be quiet with our family and our God, we must have another event in order to be happy.
“relating to or characterized by luxury or sensual pleasure”
“given to or spent in enjoyment of luxury”
Family fun night coming up -
Desire for entertainment
Loving pleasure more than God
Perilous Times Thinking Is = The pursuit of pleasure is of highest priority and pleasure is the greatest achievement
Our highest priority is seeking God
The greatest achievement is knowing Him
Romans 12:1–2 (KJV 1900)
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice,
holy, = morally blameless
acceptable unto God, = pleasing
which is your reasonable service. = logical worship and service
2 And be not conformed = fashion alike, that is, conform to the same pattern (figuratively): - conform to, fashion self according to.
to this world:
but be ye transformed = to transform (literally or figuratively “metamorphose”): - change, transfigure, transform.
by the renewing of your mind, = renovation
that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. = God’s desire
Lovers of pleasure more than x
Didn’t say we didn’t love God
How does this translate into today?
When church is happening there is something
Churches struggle to get people to come to multiple services
Even so much the more as ye see the day approaching
How do you express your passion for Christ?
When it’s difficult
When it’s inconvenient
When it’s unpopular
How do you prove your dynamic love for God?
Do you love God supremely
Demas hath forsaken me
Are you excited with the things of God?
Do you love learning Scripture?
Do I give my all when it’s time to worship the Lord in song?
A form of godliness = loving other things more than God
Form = a facade, an appearance that is not genuine
We can fool each other and we could fool ourselves about our love for God
Righteousness that is genuine
Are we trying to hide what we really are in secret
A refusal of the power of the Holy Ghost - they deny God’s power
That’s just the way I am
I was brought up different
Denying the power
The power of Christ conquers the World, the flesh, and the devil
ye shall know the truth
Why would someone deny the power - the love of flesh and sin
What do we do?
Is there anything in our life that comes before God?
2. Is the focus of your home the growing in love for God?
Have fun but let’s never teach that anything can take the place of
3. Are there any people in your life that pull you further away from the Lord
4. Who are the people you are closest to
5. Is pleasure the your highest pursuit or is God your pleasure.
