My friends, these are days we don’t look forward too. Yet, we know if we live long enough we will see those we love make their journey toward heaven.
Job says that mans days are few and full of trouble.
James tells us that Life is like a vapor, it appears for a little while and then is gone...
And so in the midst of life, we are born, we live and as long as Jesus delays His coming, we will face death as well.
Here is a thought for you to consider....
There is an old saying, “ Live your life so the preacher doesn’t have to lie at your funeral.”
Well, I don’t have to even preach Velma’s funeral, she has done that already by the way she lived, she loved the Lord and trusted Him all her days, she testified to that and demonstrated that every time you saw her. She was a dear sweet lady.
For many years she would get up early, 4 am and pray, read her Bible and listen to gospel music before breakfast. She was equipping herself for the day, making sure she was ready for what ever the day held.
So considering her life, what can I tell you today? Well let me share a few thoughts with you about her life that’s important...
A.) First off..... Velma knew Jesus as her Savior....
My friends, this is the most important truth I can tell you today. He loved and followed Jesus.
Jesus had told his followers this truth John 14:6
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Velma was a child of God, she had asked Jesus into her heart a long, long time ago and she followed Him.
And if you were around her long enough, you heard her talk about him or mention Him in her conversation. She knew him and had a confidence in Him. I cam remember so often her saying, ‘The good Lord knows, it will be alright...”
Her decision to follow Jesus was best decision she ever made, it set the course for the rest of her life. This life and the life to come...
When Velma took her last breath a few days ago, her eyes closed here, but she opened her eyes there, she opened her eyes in front of the King, the Lord Jesus.
I would remind you that the Apostle Paul said to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Cor 5:8).
And listen friends, when she made her entrance into that city, Velma not only saw her Savior, Jesus… But she saw others as well.
Velma saw those family members that had done on before her. Do you remember what the Bible tells us in Hebrews 12:1 ?
The Bible tells us that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, so when she entered heaven she saw Jesus, some of those saints like Abraham and Moses. But that’s not all, she saw her mom and dad, her sister Pat, and so many others...
But here is the truth.... none of that would have been possible if she hadn’t asked Jesus to save her so long ago my friends. That was the best decision she ever made....
You cannot earn your way to heaven, you cannot earn it or even deserve it, but thanks be to God for loving us and sending us the Savior. It is through our faith in Him at we are saved.
Now let me tell you a little more about Velma
B.) Secondly, Let me tell you about her love for her Family and her Church....
Many years ago, Steve and Velma started a family and they brought their family to church.
Steve and Velma knew the joy and blessing of raising their boys in church so that they would know about the Savior as well.
That is the mark of a godly mother, she wanted her family in church. It really identified who she was, she was a Proverbs 31 type of lady.
10 An excellent wife who can find?
She is far more precious than jewels.
She was the most precious part of her family. A mother, a wife and sister and friend to so many around her and each day you saw her strength, her love for her family and the length she would go to bless and help others.
Now by the time I arrived here, their children were all grown but if she was able, she was in church with Steve. She loved her church and was faithful to it, to pray for it, for me and for many others. She loved her church and her Lord.
Every Sunday that they were able, Steve and Velma set right over there, and every time I came in she had a smile and a hand full of mints. She always ready to take care of me.
Listen to this: One of our other mom’s told me the other day they she always had something for her kids. a snack, some candy, something to give to them, she wanted to bless them.
Why did she do this....
Velma loved not only her children, she loved all the children. Again the mark of a mother and friend whose heart was ruled by Christ.
She served and helped children for years. She worked for years to help prepare meals for the children at the schools. It was her joy to make sure a child had enough to eat, she couldn’t stand seeing a child who was hungry. And part of her gift was serving others, especially children.
She did this in the schools, but she carried that over to her church as well. She loved to help.
She helped cook meals for families as they walked though days just like this and she served the children of our church and community.
She served children in Vacation Bible School. I cannot tell you the exact number of years, she helped in vacation bible school for more than 30 years. It was only in the last couple of years that she wasn’t able to help.
Wow, she did so much… and here is the truth. I have never heard one word spoken against her, in fact just the other, she was praised by her family and others.
Her children loved her and were blessed by her as were so many she served… it made me think of this...
28 Her children rise up and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many women have done excellently,
but you surpass them all.”
It is easy for me to say my friends that Velma lived her life well my friends.. no doubt about that..
C. The Last point I want to tell you is The Greatest Truth.....
Now the last thing I want to tell you, each of you is the very truth she would want me to share with you.
Velma knew and trusted the Lord her God with all things, and she would hope you do as well.
Velma hopes each of you, family and friends, she hopes you know Jesus as well, Why? because Jesus is our only hope my friends.
Many people and groups profess a way to God but as I shared with you earlier Jesus is the only way. You want to know how to come to Jesus, here is how..
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Faith in Jesus and the confession of our mouth that we have asked Jesus to save us, that is the way to Salvation.
Velma would want to see each of you again… Bu that decision concerning Jesus isn’t one she could make for you, you have to make that one yourself.
But I want to tell you that before you leave her tonight, if you do not know Jesus , you can personally know Jesus and know that you can join Velma one day around the throne of God.
That part is up to you...
But I would leave you with these words.
D. We have Hope....
The Apostle Paul, as he worked and traveled in different regions of the world back then. He shared Jesus. And he made many friends along the way.
And there were many of those friends at Thessalonica that had seen people leave this world through death and Paul wrote to encourage them.
13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
Do you see what God has promised:
Just as Jesus died and rose again so then will all those in Christ rise again as well.
There is coming a day when the Lord will return in the air and He will call and all those who have passed will rise. This body of Velma will be brought back to life, it will be remade and God will join her soul back to the remade body and she will rise in the air to meet the Lord.
And for those who are still alive at the time of his return, they are called up next and changed in the air..
And I love Paul words here in verse 17, so we will always be the with the Lord from that point on!
Paul says encourage one another with these words.
Death isn’t the end, it is the beginning
Velma lived her life well, she lived her life in a way that honored God and served those around her. She now is enjoying her inheritance in the Lord.
How wonderful.
Lets listen to the words of this next song....
