Romans 12:1-2
Romans 12:1-2
“While Christians may worship and pray as Christians, they do not think as Christians.” This quote sums up our transparent need as believers to take an honest look at the state of our minds. Because, as Kent Hughes states, “To deny there is a conscious assault on the Christian mind and its values is like believing the earth in flat.”
The Bible speaks candidly about our minds. In fact, in the Hebrew language there is no word for, “mind,” rather it speaks about the heart. According to the Bible, the heart (soul) of a man is directly connected and reflective of the mind and vice versa. Why? Why does the Bible present such a strong admonition on the believer’s renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2), on arming ourselves with the Lord’s helmet of salvation (Ephesians 6:17), by and through the means of delighting and meditating on God’s Word (Psalm 1:2)?
In his book, “The Screwtape Letters,” C.S. Lewis depicts a conversation between two demons. The “in-training” demon is not instructed to cause such a devastating, b/c as the “trainer” demon states, the bigger the fall, the bigger the comeback. Instead, this “in-training” demon, dubbed Wormwood, is told to distract the man.
The best way man can be distracted is by taking his mind and focus off of the goodness/promises/Word of God and pointing it towards the things of this world.
The mind is the battlefield of our soul—the enemy is after it and the Lord desires it
