Key verse for this passage is John 16:33
John 16:33 NIV
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

You will have Trouble

We will have Trouble because we will be treated no differently than Jesus - John 15:18-21

vs. 18 - The world hated Jesus first
John 15:18 NIV
“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.
Vs. 19 - Acceptance is not love
John 15:19 NIV
If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
vs. 20 - As we identify with Jesus, people will treat us the same
John 15:20 NIV
Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.
Some will persecute us
Some will obey
Vs. 21 - Hated because of Jesus’ name
John 15:21 NIV
They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.
vs. 23 - Hatred of Jesus is also hatred of the Father
John 15:23 NIV
Whoever hates me hates my Father as well.

We will have Trouble because they do not know God - John 16:1-4

John 16:1–4 NIV
“All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,
Jesus desires to warn His disciples of the coming opposition
They will mistake persecution for religious fidelity
Ex. The apostle Paul - Phil 3:4-6
Philippians 3:4–6 NIV
though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.

We will have Trouble because of the Spirit’s conviction - John 16:7-11

John 16:7–11 NIV
But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
Conviction of sin, because we cannot recognize evil
Conviction of righteousness, because we think we are righteous
Conviction of judgment, because we believe we can escape consequences

You will have Peace

John 16:33 NIV
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

We will have Peace because the Spirit is coming - John 16:13-15

John 16:13 NIV
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
The Spirit reveals the truth from the Father - John 16:14-15
John 16:14–15 NIV
He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

We will have Peace because our grief will be turned to joy - perspective - John 16:20-22

John 16:20 NIV
Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
Ex. The joy of childbirth - John 16:21-22
John 16:21–22 NIV
A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.

We will have Peace in answered prayer - John 16:23-26

John 16:23–24 NIV
In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
John 16:26 NIV
In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.

We will have Peace in relationship with the Father John 16:27-28

John 16:27–28 NIV
No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”
The Father loves us
We have loved Jesus

We will have Peace because He has overcome the world - John 16:33

John 16:33 NIV
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
