Romans 6

Sin increased, Grace even More

United with Jesus

No Longer Slaves

Romans 6:6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—

Alive to God

Romans 6:11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Romans 6:15-18

Romans 6:15–18 NIV
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

No Reason to Sin

Romans 6:15 NIV
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means!
the point here is that we have no reason to sin
we are no longer under the law
we live in the grace of Jesus Christ
this is a great hope for everyone
we live in grace

Obedient Slaves

Romans 6:16 NIV
Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?
common theme in the bible
we are slaves
we do not have a choice of slave vs freedom
we are all slaves - to what?
we were slaves to sin - the natural order of things
or we can choose to be slaves to Christ
freedom can really only be achieved through Jesus
forget church, forget good deeds, forget buying a lottery ticket
be a slave to obedience = righteousness
John 14:23
Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

Obey the Teaching

Romans 6:17 NIV
But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.
used to be slaves to sin
by grace we are now slaves to Jesus
accepting Jesus as Lord gives us a new heart and the Holy Spirit
Ezekiel 36:27
And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.
means new type of teaching
John 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Holy Spirit will teach us all things
we are able to keep the commands - we can now obey in righteousness

Slaves to Righteousness

Romans 6:18 NIV
You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
here is the great hope we have in Jesus
we have been set free from sin
no burden, no heaviness, no condemnation
we are now salves to righteousness
we are compelled to obey
we are compelled to do what is right
we are compelled to be free
