The Faithfulness of God
The Faithfulness of God
I want to center us today on the covenant faithfulness of God.
1,000’s of years and generation after generation God has remained true and faithful to his people.
Your faithfulness endures to all generations;
you have established the earth, and it stands fast.
He has done so in such a way that the burden has been placed on him. He passes all the way through, taking the all the responsibility.
There is a seen in Genesis 15, after God has described to Abraham all that he is promising him, that God forges a covenant with Abraham.
Abraham sets the stage, he brings a heifer, a female goat, a ram, a turtledove, and a pigeon. Cutting them in half he places each half opposite each other.
Traditional ancient near-eastern covenant ceremony the two parties meet in the middle of the animals and make their covenant.
God does something unexpected (v.12)
He passes all the way through.
We live in a new covenant, Abraham looked forward to what God would do and we look back to his finished work on the cross. Let us remember today how God has passed all the way through to us. That on the cross he sealed the covenant in his blood and we had nothing to do with it.
Communion reminds us of God’d covenant faithfulness and as God’s covenant with Abraham reminded him of what God swore to do the wine and the bread remind us that he did it.
A new covenant in blood that seals us in Christ until alas he comes again. So today we remember the blood of Christ and how faithful our God has been to bring us back to himself.
