Luke’s Defense Of The Messiah
Luke’s Defense Of The Messiah
Luke is proving Jesus is the Messiah
his first piece of evidence is prophecy and John the Baptist testimony
next we have Jesus’ baptism
God opening up heaven and speaking about His son
Now we are going to have the royal lineage
proving that Jesus is the one promised
so he is giving us the genealogy of Jesus
from Adam to Jesus through Abraham, and David
we are going to look at the Genealogy according to Matthew and compare the 2
Luke wants us to know that Jesus is the true Messiah
Read Luke 3 23-38.

Genealogy
Genealogy
to an Israelite Genealogy is big
it establishes land holdings as we saw in Ruth
it establishes what a person is
when the Israelites came back from Babylon there was a census of who came back and what their family does
we see this in Ezra 2 62-63 we see a problem
These searched in their genealogical records, but they could not be found; therefore they were considered unclean and excluded from the priesthood.
The governor said to them that they should not eat from the most holy things until a priest stood with Urim and Thummim.
these people were not found in the genealogy and were refused as priests
they were considered unclean
Genealogy is always the male, never a female
the Jews at the time of Jesus very well understood the lineage of the Messiah
but this was not something that they could dispute about
Before we look at Luke’s Genealogy lets look at Matthew’s
I believe that the Genealogy in Matt there would be something that they could dispute about
Matt 1.
Matt gives us the Genealogy of Joseph
we have 4 women in this account
we also have in V 11 Jeconiah who is Johoiachin
Turn to Jeremiah 22 24-30
“As I live,” declares Yahweh, “even though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were a signet ring on My right hand, yet I would pull you off;
and I will give you over into the hand of those who are seeking your life, indeed, into the hand of those whom you dread, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of the Chaldeans.
“I will hurl you and your mother who bore you into another land—there you were not born, but there you will die.
“But as for the land to which their soul desires to return, they will not return to it.
“Is this man Coniah a despised, shattered jar? Or is he an undesirable vessel? Why have he and his seed been hurled out And cast into a land that they had not known?
“O land, land, land, Hear the word of Yahweh!
“Thus says Yahweh, ‘Write this man down childless, A man who will not succeed in his days; For no man of his seed will succeed Sitting on the throne of David Or ruling again in Judah.’”
We have a problem
If Jesus is desended from Solomon to Joseph then because of
‘Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah, “He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night.
“And I will also punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity, and I will bring on them and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the men of Judah all the evil that I have spoken about to them—but they did not listen.”’”
I’m thinking that with the gentile women mentioned
and the no seed of Jeconiah. Matthew was telling us that Joseph was not the lineage to follow to find the Messiah
Matthew then immediately tells us of the Virgin birth that Joseph has nothing to do with
Matthew 1:15–16 (LSB)
And Eliud was the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar was the father of Matthan, and Matthan was the father of Jacob.
And Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.
now lets Go to Luke 3 23’
V 23-24 there is already a discrepancy
Luke has a problem, there has never in the history of man a virgin birth
so how do you start a genealogy with a virgin birth
especially if you can’t use women in the genealogy
so what does Luke the historian do?
go to Mary’s Dad Eli
Eli can trace his roots back to David through Nathan, Solomon’s brother
V 31
V 33 Judah the kingly line\tribe
V 34 back to Abraham
V 36 Noah
V 38 son of Adam, Son of God
indisputable lineage
the Sanhedren checked and could not dispute in this account
God spoke from Heaven and they could not dispute this account either
Prophecy and John the Baptist presented to us the messiah
it is a good thing the Holy Spirit had Luke record this because in AD 70 all the records were destroyed with the Temple
The Genealogy is not important anymore
The Messiah has been established
the temple worship has been replaced with the new covenant
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
right now in Israel there is a longing for the temple mount to build the 3rd temple
the Jews have rejected their Messiah
and wanting to go back to the temple worship
the sacrifices that don’t save anybody
Jesus the true King
Jesus the true Messiah of God
is the only one who can save
Genealogy is important to the Jew
but God has His own books in heaven
God’s Books
God’s Books
God Has His books with every ones who ever lived name
facebook and google cant hold a candle to the amount of information that God has on you
he knows every thought you have ever had
He knows every intention of every action
He knows every secret thing
every public thing you have done
there is coming a judgement
Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sits upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them.
Then I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them, and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds.
Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.
And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
God’s book of life
remember the passage in Ezra
These searched in their genealogical records, but they could not be found; therefore they were considered unclean and excluded from the priesthood.
If you are not found in God’s records
in the book of life you will be excluded from Heaven
you will be considered unclean with sin
For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Jesus died to take the penalty for sin
the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin
Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
the sin debt has been paid
“When he had begun to settle them, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him.
“Therefore, the slave fell to the ground and was prostrating himself before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.’
“And feeling compassion, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt.
Jesus forgives the debt of sin to those who come to him by faith
it is finished
the mission of the lamb of God that has come to take away the sin
to be our substitute
to those who call upon the name of the Lord to be saved
today is the day of salvation
Luke wrote of the defence trial of Jesus
to prove He is the Messiah of God
will you turn to Him and be saved?
