How can you see?
Our story tonight will be a continuance of the healing of the blind man. Jesus makes final teaching here in Jerusalem.
Jesus calls to a man born blind.
Jesus teaches apostles
Jesus instructs the blind man
Blind man with blind faith steps out in obedience
Blind man questioned, as well as parents
Blind man claims faith and is put of the synagogue.
Jesus use sheep and Good Shepherd to illustrate the sheep fold, sheep, and sheep not of this fold that must be brought in.
After affirming His deity in chapter-9 we see him asserting his deity here in chapter-10
Of course we have to start with the passage.
31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?”
33 The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.”
34 Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? 35 “If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),
36 do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.”
39 Therefore they were seeking again to seize Him, and He eluded their grasp. 40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He was staying there.
41 Many came to Him and were saying, “While John performed no sign, yet everything John said about this man was true.” 42 Many believed in Him there.
What do you notice in this passage?
Why do you think the Jews picked up stones to stone Him?
Looking back because He had affirmed his deity (chapter-9)
Here in chapter-10 he asserts His authority. Jesus are claiming He is blasphemy (v.33)
How does Jesus respond to them picking up stones (v.32)?
What good works are you stoning me for?
What is the claim by the Jews (v.33)?
They claim not about works, but assertion equality with the Father and they considered that to be blasphemy.
Think closely, who is the he in (v.35)?
Moses since reference to the Law (v.34)
What is the difference between gods and Son of God (v.35-36)?
Them gods, would be those to whom the word of God was given (prophets)
Son of God in the One who the Father sanctified and sent into the world
Jesus calls for them to believe what if not believe Him (v.38)?
The works the Father gave Him to do.
Jesus gets away one more time, leaving the hostile Jews, where did He go and what was the response there (vv.40-42)?
Leaves and goes to Jordan
Many believed in Him there.

Jesus is the truth (Jn14:6) truth was realized through Him (Jn1:17), so if He declares something: say something in a solemn and emphatic manner. It has to be true.
To get this passage more we need to back up a verse.
30 “I and the Father are one.”
What is Jesus claim here in (Jn10:30)?

30 I and the Father are one heart and mind.” 31 Again the Jews picked up rocks to throw at him.
32 Jesus said, “I have made a present to you from the Father of a great many good actions. For which of these acts do you stone me?”
33 The Jews said, “We’re not stoning you for anything good you did, but for what you said—this blasphemy of calling yourself God.”
The claim, the declaration is of the deity of Jesus and the equality with the Father.
There is no way it can be the same person in the way it is worded, but does speak of the nature of the Godhead. This goes directly in contradiction to the “Jesus only” movement.
This one speaks of the equality in nature, essence of the Son and the Father. Directly contradicting those who say “Jesus is not God.”
Alford says: “One in essence primarily, but therefore also one in working, and power and will.”
John wants the concept to be fully understood that the Father and the Son have a unique unity because they are equally and totally God, that is, Diving Being.
Jesus claims again all works He does is from the Father (Jn10:32)
F.F. Bruce: All his works were done by the Father’s direction (Jn5:19); they were ‘good works’ not only because they were acts of obedience to the Father but also because they were acts of blessing to men.”
The Jews response of wanting to stone Him because of words not works proved they understood the claim “My Father and I are one.”
As for the stoning they were not following the Levitical law is allowing due process to happen. It needed to be proven and needed to them be the whole congregation not just a few (re: Lev24:16)
Love what Spurgeon says:
“If they cannot answer the holy arguments with fair reasoning, they can give hard answers with stones. If you cannot destroy the reasoning, you may, perhaps destroy the reasoner.”
Jesus is not making Himself God. In fact He is not making Himself anything. He is confirming and proving and showing who He is already. Equal with God as God in nature and essence.

Might I suggest that you look up these verses in a different translation then you normally use?

36 do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
37 “If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.”
39 Therefore they were seeking again to seize Him, and He eluded their grasp.
Jesus brings in (Ps82) to reason His point.
Jews had surrounded Jesus (10:24) wanted to stone Him (10:31, 33) notice Jesus was not full of fear, He did not flee, did not panic.
What He did do was reason from the scripture. He stopped them with the power of His word, since He is the word and the word is true (Jn1:1-3; Jn14:6).
Now Jesus only uses a part of Ps82, maybe we should look at it in context so you can fully understand it.
1 God takes His stand in His own congregation; He judges in the midst of the rulers. 2 How long will you judge unjustly And show partiality to the wicked? Selah.
3 Vindicate the weak and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and destitute. 4 Rescue the weak and needy; Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.
5 They do not know nor do they understand; They walk about in darkness; All the foundations of the earth are shaken. 6 I said, “You are gods, And all of you are sons of the Most High.
7 “Nevertheless you will die like men And fall like any one of the princes.” 8 Arise, O God, judge the earth! For it is You who possesses all the nations.
God uses the judges to judge and they are called gods (1-5, 6-7)
Tasker says:
“They were entitled to be so designated, for they represented, however imperfectly, the divine will in so far as they were called upon to administer God’s word.”
The use of Ps82 was a metaphor . To expose the ignorance and the inconsistency of the accusers.
Now go back to our passage and look at (v.36) - It is the Father sanctifies and the Father who sent Him into the world (goes with Jn3:16)
What a great, wonderful way for Jesus to speak of Himself (Son of God) and that the Father sent Him into the world. Remember He came to seek and save the lost.He came that the world maybe saved through Him.
The word came through the prophets but the Son came through the Father.
Jesus says if I do not do the Fathers work, don’t believe Me, believe the works.
Why do you think Jesus would say believe the works?
This brings us to (v.39) they (the Jews) did not not like Jesus reasoning and looked to seize Him again (Jn7:30 another example).
They could not lay hands on Him yet, for His hour had not come. But it is (Mk14:41)
41 And He came the third time, and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough; the hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Unreceptive, hostile, Jesus departs. To a place of His history.
40 Jesus then went back again across the River Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing, and he stayed there.
41 Many people came to him. “John performed no miracles,” they said, “but everything he said about this man was true.”
42 And many people there believed in him.
Time before his final return to Jerusalem, the time of arrest and crucifixion was quickly approached, but not yet, so he went back beyond the Jordan where John was baptizing.

Jesus was now in the region of Perrea the area of Herod Antipas, where the rulers of Jerusalem had no rule, no authority. Jesus would be safe then, at least for a time.
Morris said: “In the place where one might have thought He would be welcomed men tried to stone Him. Now in despised Perea men believed on Him.”
This is remenent of
44 For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.
John performed no miracles but what he ha to say about Jesus was true.
Truth impacts people, and with those in Perea it brought about faith.

John did no miracles; but was one of high character
John did no miracles, but had a special work, mission to do
John did no miracles, but impacted many
John did no miracles, but won the highest praise of Jesus
The gives, the tasks given to us it not just to a few selected people but to all collectively to impact the world for the kingdom of God.
Many in that day came to believe, and today we have the same opportunity. We may face some of the same hostility and rejection, but that did not stop Jesus, the apostles, the early church or should it stop us today.
