Grievance of the Spirit:
Something in a Name

Introduction

There is something in the name that we give to others. It signifies who, what, and how we relate to them. We give others nicknames that we associate with them.
Other times we use terms that are universal to call to someone. If we forget their name we may say brother, bro, man, hey, dude, Mr, friend. Some that may seem foreign to us mate, chum, chap, carnal, tomo, cara, lad, brod. Most of these we may never have even heard of but they are all common terms in different countries to address others.
In the Bible there are terms to address others also. Brother/ Sister, friend, servant, elect. Then there are these also fool, hypocrite, wicked, snake/ viper.
From these words you know enough to understand some are good some are negative. In todays verse the same is true there is 2 names shared and one is positive one is negative. We see Saint and we see Son of Disobedience. We fall into one of these two categories. These two names serve as a line that is drawn. You stand on one side or the other and by what you do it bears that name.

Word picture
car driving in the rain
sons of disobedience are like a car driving without brakes in the rain. They slip and slide all over the place running through life trying to get to the next best thing willing to plow over whom ever gets in their way. They have one way it is with the acceleration never giving thought to that which they have destroyed in the process. They are at the mercy of the car and the car cant stop. These are the ones who God is their co-pilot, God is not their God, they act like what these verses say not to do.
The saints are like the car with full working brakes in the rain. Able to slow down when they come to the curve. They can slow down when near someone or about to loose control. They revere that which lies ahead always on guard and looking out. Not for just themselves but others to. Able to control their desires and temptation. These are the ones that God is the driver, God is the Lord of their lives, and act like a saint of the most high.
In the end the car comes to a flooded road the water is rushing, it has took out most the road, it is raging with white caps and is the image of death. The first car cant stop and is swept away to death, the second sees it coming slows down and stops far enough away to see its destruction but not to be swept up by it. It can hear it, see it, knows its there. But is able not to be swallowed up by it.

Application

Our name bears who we follow
That is what God calls us
Son of disobedience or saint of His
Corruption bears corruption
Corrupt thought, bears corrupt actions, bears corrupt association, which leads to eternal corruption in hell.
Your actions speak to whose you are
The things that you are is the substance of who you follow and vice versa. The one that you follow will shine through what you do.
Disciples are an example, the whole Bible, Church Fathers
Your Inheritance is from Whom You Serve
God, Life
Other, Death

Conclusion

Partaker or Not
Its in the name of being a partaker or not a partaker. We see it clear in verse 7.
It is a simple decision it is your choose. Some may say i have the right to do as I wont no you dont you are no longer a partaker of this world but of God. If this is true you were bought with a price and if you are bought you no longer live for you but for Him. We are His and He is ours. We live to glorify Him alone.
