The Word of God
What it will do for you
Psalms 119:9-16
Introduction:
I am not going to give you anything new this evening I would just like to, piggy back on what Bro. Jim brought us this morning. I really want us to know just how important God’s Word is and what His Word will do for us if we allow it.
Christ declared the importance of God’s Word when He said, “sanctify them by thy truth, for thy Word is truth.” If we are going to live righteously and godly in this present, evil world you must do as the psalmist says in our text, “I will hide thy Words in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
Main:
God uses
I) His Word Will Mold You

A) By Correction V9
A) By Correction V9
The word cleanse means to be clean or to make clean.
- So how is a young man to keep himself unspotted by the world. By taking heed to the Word of God. This verse does not indicate anything about the past of the young man.
- So how does the Lord Mold you into what he wants you to be. By showing us how to be clean and pure. He corrects you, He chastises you, His Word gets you on track.
2Co_7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Eph_5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
How does God cleanse you by His word? Thanks for asking…
Heb. 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
B) By Direction (v10)
B) By Direction (v10)
With my whole heart have I sought thee. O let me not wander (to stray, get off the path, head in a different direction)
· God keeps you on the paths of righteousness by His word.
· This verse indicates that the young man is one of the blessed from verse 2, but he is still aware of his weakness.
· This is one of the strongest attributes that a child of God can have, is to be aware of their inability to continue on the right path alone.
· A man aware of this weakness will seek God with everything he has through prayer. God will answer him through His word and put him back on the right path.
If you are traveling cross country and let’s say your GPS goes haywire and you get lost. Are you going to get where you need to go? No. The only way you can get back on track is if you stop and ask for directions or purchase a road map. I have some good news for you this morning, you have all the directions you need to get back on track while traveling down this road called life this is your road map. So how are you going to keep from getting lost during this journey? Know the directions, keep the map with you and you will have a successful journey.
Ps. 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
Jer.10:23 O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
C) By Protection (v11)
C) By Protection (v11)
“I have hid,” indicates he has stored up Gods word like treasure, sealed it in a secret place so as not to be tainted by the world. “that I might not” “purpose I sin not a sin against you”
Protect from what? Sin, I’m not saying you won’t sin but you have a much better chance of succeeding at it by hiding Gods word in your heart, then not hiding it.
Ps. 19:13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
Ps. 116:8 For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.
D) By Instruction (v12)
D) By Instruction (v12)
The Lord teaches you His statues. He teaches you about His grace and I believe when you learn about His grace and mercy, you wont be able to contain it.
Jer. 20:9 Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.
Mar. 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Act. 10:42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
I) His Word will mold you
God uses His Word to molds us how he wants us. We should never question anything that comes from His Word. Why don’t you allow His Word today to Mold you by correcting you and directing you and why not hide Gods Word so that it will protest you for doing what you should not do so you can be his servant ready for the masters use.
II. His Word Will Motivate You
II. His Word Will Motivate You
v.13-14
A) To Declare His Word (v13)
A) To Declare His Word (v13)
The idea that this verse is giving is, the writer has been so moved by the judgments (i.e law, statues) of God that he endeavored by argument and persuasion, to bring others under its influence. How he did this we do not know, but we have no reason to believe that he was anymore then just a man after Gods own heart. Having no reason to believe other wise, we have a great example of what a believer should do in making known and defending divine truth.
A believer living a life not engrossed in daily pastoral duty is just as bound to declare and defend the whole council of God in their sphere of daily life as the pastor is. You have more opportunity to do this then the pastors do, so do it.
You say Pastor how can I do this, I don’t know enough about His Word to defend or declare it?
I have the answer for you….
You can simply declare His Word by giving your testimony.
Ps. 66:16 Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.
Ps. 73:28 But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.
Ps. 96:3 Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.
You can simply defend His Word, by living it
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run, and not be weary; And they shall walk, and not faint.
Dont be a hypocrite.
Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.
B) To Rejoice In His Word (v14)
B) To Rejoice In His Word (v14)
because you see His testimony v14
You get discouraged because you are in a storm, you know for certain that this is what the Lord wills for you to “go over the other side”, but the storm is so great and you can’t seem to go any further. Just look in His word and you will find encouragement. You will find that God knows and is right there with you, “Fear not” is his words and you can Rejoice in them.
You are tempted to what you think is your breaking point, just look to Christ in the wilderness or Daniel.
You cant seem to keep fighting for what is right, just read about Paul or James or even John.
You say it feels as if your prayers are not being heard, Look to the Syrophoenician woman who kept praising Christ until she got an answer.
Others testimonies from Gods Word will help you when everything seems to be falling apart
When God moves you to say something to someone do it because he has already commanded us to go into all the world and preach the gospel. If Gods Word has already commanded you to do it then why no just do it. The fields are white for the harvest is not just a missionary command it is a command to all believers. When God has told you to do something or not do something according to His Word, respond accordingly. Live His Word. Allow your life to be a witness of Gods saving grace.
III. His Word Will Move You
III. His Word Will Move You
“I Will” Is used 3 times and it is common perception that the Psalmist is implying it a fourth time
A) It Moves You to Meditate on It
A) It Moves You to Meditate on It
v15
We get down in the dumps and we seem lonely, we can turn to His blessed word and Meditate on His promises. Knowing
He will never leave you nor forsake you
Knowing we can cast all our cares upon Him for He careth for you.
Knowing that He is the God of all grace.
When you feel as if God has stopped working in your life,
Just remember His ways are not our ways, His thoughts are not our thoughts
Just look around at what he has already done
Just thank Him for what he has already provided in your life
B) It Moves You To Respect It
B) It Moves You To Respect It
v15
When you know Gods word you will ask why now a lot less becasue you will have respect for not only His ways but His timing.
C) It Moves You to Delight in It
C) It Moves You to Delight in It
v16
The word delight means no need for anything else. God’s Word satisfies “For man shall not live on bread alone, but by every word that proceddeth out of the mouth of God.”
You wont go looking to the world for help, you become satisfied with the teachings of this Book.
You become satisfied with Him.
D) It Moves You to Remember It
D) It Moves You to Remember It
v.16
If you stay in His word and learn His word you will not forget His word
You will need to remember His word because there will come times when His word will be comfort to you.
For I am become like a bottle in the smoke;
Yet do I not forget thy statutes.
My soul is continually in my hand:
Yet do I not forget thy law.
I am small and despised:
Yet do not I forget thy precepts.
RESH.
Consider mine affliction, and deliver me:
For I do not forget thy law.
Allowing God’s Word to mold you, motivate you and move you will allow Him to be glorified through you.
Is that not the chief end of man. “To glorify God and enjoy Him forever.”
But if you are here today and have never repented of your sins and called on the only one that can save you, Jesus Christ, then it does not matter how much you read His Word, it will never become what you need it to be until you become one of His. To truly understand Gods word you must be born again.
1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
In closing I would like to ask you a couple of questions:
1. Does God’s Word have a daily impact on you?
Do you read His word daily?
2. Does God’s Word hold a special place in your life?
