Exposition
Psalm 119:9–16 LSB
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. 10 With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me stray from Your commandments. 11 Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You. 12 Blessed are You, O Yahweh; Teach me Your statutes. 13 With my lips I have recounted All the judgments of Your mouth. 14 I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much as in all riches. 15 I will muse upon Your precepts And look upon Your ways. 16 I shall delight in Your statutes; I shall not forget Your word.

The purification of God’s elect

Psalm 119:9–11 LSB
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. 10 With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me stray from Your commandments. 11 Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.
v9 - The Psalmist exhorts us to remember that the individual has no method of keeping him or herself pure except with the instruction of the Word.
With no purity there is no salvation before the Lord.
v 10 - A plea for God to be the one to uphold us, a confession of personal insufficiency
v11 - Here we have the thrust of this passage

The Perfection of God’s Word

Psalm 119:12 LSB
12 Blessed are You, O Yahweh; Teach me Your statutes.
An opening of Personal plea
A request of Pastoral (shepherding) action
James 1:22–25 ESV
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
The perfection of God’s Word is not simply our statement of the sufficiency and worthiness of the Word, but also a recognition of the perfecting power it has in the life of God’s people.

The Potential of God’s Law

Psalm 119:13–16 LSB
13 With my lips I have recounted All the judgments of Your mouth. 14 I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much as in all riches. 15 I will muse upon Your precepts And look upon Your ways. 16 I shall delight in Your statutes; I shall not forget Your word.
Like potential energy, there is a force that is stored up, ready to be unleashed.
v13-14 - Declare all God’s rules as true and you will delight in God more than in great riches.
God’s law is worth deep consideration (This unleashes the power) v13
God’s law causes rejoicing v14
For the treasure of salvation
For the treasure of counsel
For the treasure of wisdom (Not a promise of a better life, but a guide)
v15 - Meditate on God’s word and you will fixate on righteous ways over fleshly ways
“Muse” in LSB; “Meditate” in ESV, NASB95, NIV, CSB, KJV, Geneva; “Study” in NLT;
What we have here is a word that tries to sum up the whole of the sentence/statement it is within.
v16 - Learn to enjoy God’s Word and you will never leave God’s Word
Understand how you personally learn and lean into it.
The potential of God’s law is this, when the power of the Word is unleashed in the life of the believer they are changed. Now and forever, they are changed.
