Who was David in the Bible

Saul didn’t measure up as God’s king. He messed up over and over again that God sent Samuel to find His chosen shepherd, David, the son of Jesse.
David is believed to had been 12-16 years old when he was anointed king over Israel, an unlikely choice, humanly speaking. David was the youngest of Jesse’s sons and Samuel thought Eliab the oldest was surely the anointed one.
1 Samuel 16:7 KJV 1900
7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
Lesson: Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. Look inward as God does.
1 Samuel 16:10–12 KJV 1900
10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these. 11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. 12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
1 Samuel 16:13 KJV 1900
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
where do we see the spirit coming upon God’s anointed one?
John 1:32 KJV 1900
32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
1 Samuel 16:14 KJV 1900
14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.
lesson: when we turn from God we leave an opening for evil to come into our lives.
1 Samuel 16:17 KJV 1900
17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
Saul was in torment and needing relief, asking his servants to find someone to help him.
Question: Who is our relief from evil today?
1 Samuel 16:21 KJV 1900
21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
Saul’s pleasure in David vanished quickly as David rose in strength and fame. In perhaps one of the best known biblical accounts. David slew the giant, Goliath of Gath. this story we find in 1 Samuel17
in 1Samuel18 ,we find Saul’s anger and jealously towards David turn murderous. He even offered two of his daughters to David to wed so he would become a target of the Philistine’s, to which David denied. then Saul wanted the foreskin of a hundred Philistines and David returned with two hundred. Jonathon Saul’s eldest son whom became one in the spirit and a trusted friend with David and Saul’s youngest daughter Michal{MI’xal} warned David of Saul’s murderous intention and David fleed from Saul, the next years of his life. During this time David wrote several songs during this time, including Psalms 57,59 and Psalms142
Rescue from enemies, Prayer for protection, and Deliverance from pursuers
Although Saul never stopped pursuing him’ David never raised a hand against his king and God’s anointed one. Even when Saul died David mourned [2Samuel1]. Even knowing that he was God’s anointed, David did not force his way to the throne. He respected God’s sovereignty and honored the authorities God had currently in place, trusting that God would fulfill His will in His timing.
Think about Romans8:31
Romans 8:31 KJV 1900
31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
While on the run David raised up a mighty army and with the power from God defeated everyone in his path, always asking God’s permission and instructions before going into battle, a practice that continued as king, once king, David remained a powerful military commander and soldier. Second Samuel 23 recounts some of the exploits of David’s so-called “mighty men.” God honored and rewarded David’s obedience and gave him success in everything he did.
2 Samuel 8:6 KJV 1900
6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.
David began to take other wives. He married Abigail, a widow of Carmel, during the time he was fleeing from Saul.David had also married Ahinoam of Jezreel, not to be confused with Saul’s wife. After Saul’s death David was publicly anointed king over the house of Judah, and he then had to fight against the house of Saul before being anointed king over all of Israel at the age of 30. Now king David took Michal back to be his wife again.
2 Samuel 5:7 KJV 1900
7 Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David.
Now David wanted to bring back the Ark of the Covenant Back to Jerusalem, but he omitted some of God’s instruction on how to transport and carry the ark. 2Samuel6:1-7
2 Samuel 6:1–7 KJV 1900
1 Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2 And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the Lord of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims. 3 And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart. 4 And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark. 5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals. 6 And when they came to Nachon’s threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it. 7 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.
Lesson: disobedience to God {sin} =death cast into the lake of fire
David then abandoned the moving of the ark and let it rest in the house of Oded-Edom Three months later, David resumed the plan to bring the ark to Jerusalem. this time, he followed God’s instructions.
Lesson: Repentance
2 Samuel 6:14 KJV 1900
14 And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.

2 Samuel 6:16 KJV 1900
16 And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal Saul’s daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart.
Lesson: Praise God no matter who may be watching or what they may think of you.
2 Samuel 6:22 KJV 1900
22 And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour.
David tell us that he will praise the Lord despite what people say.
John 4:24 KJV 1900
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
2Samuel7 tells us that after David had settled in his palace and had peace with his enemies that he wanted to build a temple for the Lord. he told the prophet Nathan who told him to do as he wanted, cause God was with him, but Got told Nathan that David would not build the temple but Solomon would, and that God would build David as house. This also spoke of the coming of the Messiah, the son of David who would reign forever. David responded in humility and awe” Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family,that you brought me thus far?” David’s entire prayer can be seen in 2Samuel7: 18-29. Before David died, he made preparations for the temple. God’s reason for not allowing him to build the temple was that he had shed too much blood, but David’s son would be a man of peace and not war. Solomon would build the temple{1chronicles22}
Much of David’s blood shed was a result of war. But, there is one incident that David had one of his mighty men killed. David was a man of God, but he was also human and therefore sinful. While his armies were at war, David stayed home and from his rooftop he saw a beautiful woman bathing. He found out that she was Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, one of his mighty men who was at war and David sent for her. David slept with her and she became pregnant. David called Uriah back from battle hoping he would sleep with his wife and believe the child to be his, but Uriah refuse to go home while his men were at war. So David arranged for Uriah to be killed in battle. David then married Bathsheba. { 2Samuel 11} This incident show us that everyone, even those we highly esteem, struggle with sin. It also serves as a cautionary tale about temptation and the way sin can quickly multiply.
Lesson: trying to hide one sin can lead to committing another and so forth.
The prophet Nathan confronted David about his sin with Bathsheba. David responded in repentance. He wrote Psalm 51 { confession and forgiveness} at this time, Here we see David’s humility and his true heart for the Lord. Though Nathan told David that his son would die as a result of his sin, David pleaded with the Lord for his son’s life. David’s relationship with God was such that he was willing to persist in faith and to hope that God might relent. When God enacted His judgment, David accepted it completely {2Samuel12} In this story we also see God’s grace and sovereignty. Solomon, David’s son who succeeded him and through whom Jesus descended. was born of David and Bathsheba.
Lesson: repentance doesn’t mean the consequences of the sin is forgiven too, but we must except God’s will and still praise Him for He knows what is right.
God also told David through the prophet Nathan that the sword would not depart from his house. Indeed David’s household had much trouble from that time on. We see this among David’s children when Amnon raped Tamar, Leading to Absalom’s murder of Amnon, and Absalom’s conspiracy against David. Nathan also told David that his wives would be given to one who was close to him; this would not occur in secret as had David’s sin with Bathsheba, but in public. The prophesy was fulfilled when Absalom slept with his father’s concubines on the roof for all to see. {2Samuel16} gives this account.
David was the author of many Psalms. In them we see the way he sought after and glorified God. He is often thought of as the shepherd king and warrior poet.
2 Samuel 23:1 KJV 1900
1 Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, And the man who was raised up on high, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel, said,
Here he is also referred to as the sweet psalmist. David’s life seemed filled with the range of human emotions, a common shepherd boy with great confidence in God’s faithfulness who honored authorities, fled for his life, and became king against whom all future kings of Isreal would be measured, He saw many military victories.
He also fell into grave sin, and his family suffered as a result. But through it all David turned to God and trusted Him. Even in the psalms when David is downcast or despondent. we see him lift his eyes up to his master and give Him praise. This reliance on God and continual pursuit of a relationship with God is part of what makes David a man of God’s own heart.
God promised David a descendant to rule on the throne forever, That everlasting king is Jesus, the messiah and son of David.
