Matthew 8: 5 - 13
Matthew 8: 5 - 13
5 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,
6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.
7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.
8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.
In chapter 7 of the book of Matthew Jesus
had been teaching the people about the
things of God. He told them that to hear
his saying and not to do them was as a
foolish man.
Mat 7:26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
Mat 7:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
Right after that when Jesus came down from the mountain a man with leprosy asked Jesus to heal him. Jesus touched him and he was healed.
In our text today we will explore Jesus healing a servant without touching him or even being in the same house with him.
SPEAK THE WORD
5 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,
6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.
7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.
8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
In these verses we read that Jesus was
going into Capernaum which according to
Matthew 4:13 is now where he lives. While
on his walk a gentile approaches him. But
not just any gentile. This man was a
Roman centurion, a commander of the
Roman occupation force. *
This centurion came to Jesus not for
himself but for his servant. He must have
loved his servant because he went to
Jesus who some considered just another
Jewish Rabbi. The servant was sick of the
palsy which means he was paralyzed and
was greatly afflicted.
Jesus agrees to go and heal the servant
but this centurion considers himself
unworthy of Jesus entering his house. He
didn’t think more of himself than he
should but he humbled himself before the
Lord.
The scripture does not tell us of when this
man got faith in Jesus but he proved that
he had faith first by coming to Jesus,
asking him to heal his servant. Secondly
by saying to Jesus speak the word only
and my servant shall be healed. *
Look at the centurion’s humility. He felt
that he was unworthy that one so good
and great as Christ should come under his
roof; and in doing so, he was counted
worthy that Christ should enter into his
heart.
The Bible Knowledge Commentary (8:5–13)
When Jesus said He would go and heal
him, the centurion replied that would
not be necessary. As a man who was
used to giving orders, he understood the
principle of authority. One with
authority does not need to be present to
accomplish a task. Orders may be
carried out by others even at a distance.
Jesus marveled at the centurion’s great
faith (cf. Matt. 15:28), for this was the
kind of faith He was vainly looking for in
Israel. Faith such as this made entrance
into His kingdom of God possible,
regardless of nationality, race, or
geographical residence. *
The centurions’s faith surpassed anything
that Jesus found among the Jews, for it
combined a loving concern for another
person with great trust in Christ. *
Many from the farthest parts of the earth
shall embrace the terms and enjoy the
rewards of the Gospel covenant
established with Abraham. But the
unbelieving Jews, who have the first title
to them, shall be shut out from the feast;
from grace here, and hereafter from glory.
Luke 13:29 NIV People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God.
Children of the kingdom refers to first the
Jews and then to those who are not Jews
but love the Lord. That means believers in
the Lord Jesus Christ.
Outer darkness refers to the
condemnation of the second death. When
souls will be cast away from God forever.
In that place there will be weeping and
torment. Jesus said this to draw attention
to the fact that the punishment will be
severe for those that reject him.
Evan though he was a gentile the servant
was healed because of the faith of the
centurion. The incident emphasizes the
foolishness of Israel’s rejection of Jesus as
the Messiah.
Because of his faith Jesus gave the
centurion encouraging words when said
to him, Go thy way; and as thou hast
believed, so be it done unto thee.
Just as he believed it, that’s how he got it.
The servant was was healed that very
hour.
Are you believing God for anything? Then
how is you faith? Because you may get
just like you believe it.
What you need to do is put a word on it.
SPEAK THE WORD!!!
Psalm 18:21. Death and life is in the
power of the tongue.
If you are sick, speak a word on it. By his
stripes I am healed!
Money looking funny, speak a word on it.
Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
Are you seeking more faith then you must
speak a word on it.
Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
