Wondrous things out of the law
Psalm 119:17–24 NKJV
17 Deal bountifully with Your servant, That I may live and keep Your word. 18 Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law. 19 I am a stranger in the earth; Do not hide Your commandments from me. 20 My soul breaks with longing For Your judgments at all times. 21 You rebuke the proud—the cursed, Who stray from Your commandments. 22 Remove from me reproach and contempt, For I have kept Your testimonies. 23 Princes also sit and speak against me, But Your servant meditates on Your statutes. 24 Your testimonies also are my delight And my counselors.
I. Finding Great Opportunities in the word of God. VS 17-20
VS 17
Psalm 119:17 (NKJV)
17 Deal bountifully with Your servant, That I may live and keep Your word.
“Deal bountifully” Reward your servent.
a. He calls himself a servant. Slave. Elab
b. Live: To have life, sustain life.
c. Keep they word. Hedge (hedge of protection) to observe.
VS 18
Psalm 119:18 NKJV
18 Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law.
1. God’s word brings a light to our soul. The soul is a very dark place until God’s word shines in.
a. It is a great thing we someone’s eyes are opened to God’s word.
b. Once they are opened by the Holy Spirit we need to get them open.
c. When we keep them open (elab how) God will show us the wondrous things.
Wondrous: surpassing and extraordinary. To be marvelous.
Law: Commandments.
Psalm 119:19 NKJV
19 I am a stranger in the earth; Do not hide Your commandments from me.
God’s word keeps us from being lonely.
Stranger: Guest.
There are times where we may feel lonely, when we feel like nobody cares or understands. But if we have someone in our life that is great encourager, a great companion it will bring us great comfort.
Hide: conceal.
VS 20
Psalm 119:20 NKJV
20 My soul breaks with longing For Your judgments at all times.
Breaketh: Broken, crushed.
Longing: Desire.
He is talking about a spiritual desire to be closer to God.
Elab magnet and a nettle.
II. Finding great opposition to the Word of God. VS 21-24
VS 21
Psalm 119:21 NKJV
21 You rebuke the proud—the cursed, Who stray from Your commandments.
Rebuked:
Proud: Arrogant.
Err: To go astray.
It is pride that makes people think that they are greater than God, or God’s way.
Lucifer:
People that don’t think they need to be saved.
VS 22
Psalm 119:22 NKJV
22 Remove from me reproach and contempt, For I have kept Your testimonies.
Reproach: Disgrace, shame.
Contempt: Disrespect.
Many believers have strayed away from God, and the truth of God’s word.
VS 23
Psalm 119:23 NKJV
23 Princes also sit and speak against me, But Your servant meditates on Your statutes.
Princes: Head person.
Meditate: Ponder
Statutes: Something prescribed.
VS 24
Psalm 119:24 NKJV
24 Your testimonies also are my delight And my counselors.
Testimonies: Witness
Delight: Enjoyment, pleasure.
Counselors. Hebrew word used to describe a champion.
