-Who is Cush? one of Saul’s men, or Saul himself
1 There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite, a man of wealth.
2 And he had a son whose name was Saul, a handsome young man. There was not a man among the people of Israel more handsome than he. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.
v.1-2
-David sought refuge in many places:
-he left gibeah and sought refuge with Samuel at Naioth in Ramah, went back to Jonathan in Gibeah, to Ahimelech priest in Nob, then to Gath, cave of Adullam, then to the stronghold, forest of Hereth, Keilah, valley of Ziph, wilderness of Maon, Engedi, wilderness of Paran, to Achish in Gath
-David knew that God really was his refuge, he was confident of God’s refuge because of the covenantal relationship
9 he lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket; he lurks that he may seize the poor; he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net.
12 He is like a lion eager to tear, as a young lion lurking in ambush.
13 they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion.
17 How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their destruction, my precious life from the lions!
v.3-5
-He references “Lord” or “God” fourteen times
-false accusations
9 And David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘Behold, David seeks your harm’?
-Notice David’s honest humility
7 So David persuaded his men with these words and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way.
v.6-9
-three ways David called on the Lord:
-arise, lift yourself up, awake, let the assembly gather
-reflection on how God is just
-what did David ask the Lord to do? judge my heart
-When we are right before God, when we strive to honor Him and when desire for our thoughts and intentions toward others to be God honoring then we do not have to fear the judgment of God
v.10-16
-God does not allow sin to go unnoticed
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,
25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature;
27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.
29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips,
30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,
31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
v.14-16 - James 1:14-15
14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
v.17
-We rejoice because God is just and righteous
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.)
16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.
