Intro Option 2: Would you rather?
Would you rather study hard and get an A on an exam or spend a weekend at the beach and get a C on your exam?
Would you rather help someone move into a new house or binge-watch your favorite show?
Would you rather go viral on the internet or live a quiet but meaningful life with your friends and family?
Would you rather have common sense and a low IQ or have a high IQ without common sense?
The point: Jesus did the hard thing
Main Point: Jesus overcame temptation
The Question: How did Jesus overcome temptation?
Jesus trusted in the Father’s provision
Matthew 4:1–4 (ESV)
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written,
“ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
Satan tempts Jesus to provide for Himself
Jesus resists, quoting Deut. 8:3.
Why would it have been sinful for Jesus to make bread for himself to feed His hunger?
Disqualified sacrifice
Satan as victor
Temptation is not sin (Heb 4:15)
How is temptation different from sin?
Sin = missing the mark
Temptation = the enticement, bait, or draw to sin.
Adam and Eve didn’t resist
Jesus did resist
Manna in the OT
Spiritual needs over physical needs
Main Point: Jesus overcame temptation
The Question: How did Jesus overcome temptation?
Jesus trusted in the Father’s provision
Jesus trusted in the Father’s plan
Matthew 4:5–7 ESV
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ” 7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
God’s specific plan
Why is following God’s plan for our lives so important?
His plans are eternal
Satan: demonstrated Messiah without suffereing
A crown without a cross
Universal desire: God’s approval demonstrated
Why didn’t Jesus take a shortcut to show the Jews He was their Messiah?
Devils plan, not God’s plan
Quote: Deut. 6:16.
Jesus chose to endure the suffering within God’s plan rather than enjoy the shortcuts outside of God’s plan
Main Point: Jesus overcame temptation
The Question: How did Jesus overcome temptation?
Jesus trusted in the Father’s provision
Jesus trusted in the Father’s plan
Jesus trusted in the Father’s promotion
Matthew 4:8–11 ESV
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ” 11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
Jesus: King of the World
Shortcut: Global fame
Why did the devil use the Kingdoms of the world and their splendor to tempt Jesus? What ways are we tempted in this area as well?
The temptation: Promotion without pain
Skip the cross and resurrection
2 problems:
The devil can’t give what he doesn’t have
Jesus would have to reject God’s will
What motivated Jesus not to take the shortcut to worldwide influence and power?
Gained with the devil < lose with the Father
Jesus trusted God’s promotion.
Christ Connection:
Jesus overcame the temptations and sin that Adam did not. Jesus showed He is obedient to the Father, and He is the worthy One who would undo the consequences of Adam’s sin and bring blessing to all the peoples of the earth (see Gen. 12:3). Jesus’s life of obedience led Him to the cross, the place where He conquered sin and death as our Savior.
Head: Why is it important to go to Jesus first when we are tempted?
Jesus is the only human to ever resist all temptation and fully trust and obey God.
Hebrews 4:16: He’s always available
Heart: What can motivate us to resist temptation?
A heart satisfied in God is hard to tempt with lesser things.
Hands: Considering Jesus’s example in the wilderness, what’s a practical way for us to resist temptation?
Psalm 119:11 ESV
11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
