Last night we talked about whether or not we know Jesus.
The beginning of the Christian journey is following Him.
Today we are going to cover the basics of what it means to follow Him, and we will begin this morning with talking about what it means to be a disciple.
What is a disciple?
One who follows and learns the ways of another and travels with them.
So what do we mean when we say the Word discipleship?
Discipleship is the process of devoting oneself to a teacher to learn from and become more like them. For the Christian, this refers to the process of learning the teachings of Jesus and following after his example in obedience through the power of the Holy Spirit. Discipleship not only involves the process of becoming a disciple but of making other disciples through teaching and evangelism.
Three Key Things to being a disciple:
Knowing Jesus- Begins at salvations and grows as we learn more about Him
Obeying Him- Goes along with learning about Him, the more we know Him, the more we look at ourselves and see if we are following His example.
What are some practical ways that I follow and obey Jesus?
Prayer
Reading the Word
Fellowshipping with other believers
Formal and Non- Formal
Being discipled: Spend time with others who know more than you to grow.
Evangelism
Making other disciples- teach others about Him and try to lead them to Him. Matt 28:16-20
So ask yourselves these questions:
What gets in the way of me following Jesus?
Is it something I have to give up?
Is it sinful?
Am I spending my time seeking after God?
Who am I serving with my time?
