Mark 14:43-15:38
What has happened at this point:
Passover Meal- We now celebrate it as the Lord’s Supper
Jesus predicts Peter’s denial
Prayer in the garden (v. 36)
V. 43-50
Judas had betrayed Jesus, for money
Jesus willingly goes with them so that the scriptures may be fulfilled
V. 53-65
Jesus goes before a court of Jewish believers who berate Him, call Him a liar, and when He tells them who He is, they beat Him
V. 66-72
In the face of adversity, Peter, probably the most bold of the disciples, sometimes recklessly so, abandons Him.
V.1-15
Pilate interviews Jesus and thinks He is innocent.
Pilate offers to release Him, but instead the crowd chooses Barrabus, an actual criminal to be released instead of Jesus.
V.16-32
Christ was mocked, beaten, and hung upon a cross.
V.33-34
Christ is calling out a cry of pain
But it is also a reference to Psalm 22 which is a psalm of lament, but one of victory pointing to the fact that in Christ people will be led back to God. People will be restored and God will receive the praise.
Why did Christ ask for the cup to pass from Him? Was he talking about the physical pain, or something much more?
V.34-38
The veil is torn- no longer is this separation from God because of mankind's sin, but through the death of the Son of God, God has paid the debt of sin and may once again dwell with His people.
This is the crescendo of the book, that the gentile soldier declares that Christ is the Son of God. Here is a definitive statement identifying that Christ is the Messiah and that He is the Son of God.
This is the beginning mark of discipleship.
Mankind’s greatest issue is the sin that separates us from God, and here we have the ultimate and final payment of it.
We have the death of a sacrifice of infinite worth, to make right and redeem people who have incurred an infinite death.
This is why Jesus is so important, because without Him, you’ve got nothing.
But thanks be to God that we can be restored and redeemed by repenting and putting our faith in Him.
The question before you now is this, do you know and follow Him.
You have heard about Him and what He has done, but will you follow Him.
Jesus said that whoever loses His life will save it. What good is it to gain the world and lose your soul.
