1 And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
“second time” - SECOND CHANCE, REDEMPTION
“great city” - 3 days to walk through, many idols, brutal and war-like culture
jonah in uncomfortable territory to witness
God was with him though
mission to the gentiles
naaman
rahab
grace and mercy of God allowing gentiles into the fold
Jonah was on a mission for God
to the “sick” to the people who truly needed it
3 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey.
ARISE! - motivated for God - he was doing what God wanted him to do
Nineveh - Bible means it takes 3 days to walk across
Nineveh was intimidating
not only motivated but obedient - doer, not just sayer
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Be not forgetful of the perfect law of liberty, of God’s Word
continue therein - consistency
this man shall be blessed
4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
Jonah just went for it, whether intimidated, scared, or anything else
may have been scared to be killed, harassed, heckled - did it anyway
Jonah probably thought that nobody would believe this message - did it anyway
NINEVEH FOR A SECOND - only a limited time to repent - time goes by quickly
this goes for everyone around us
5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
Unexpected result - you never know
Wouldn’t have happened if Jonah did not obey
How much they grieved over their sin - do we feel as bad as the people of nineveh? - they took their sins seriously
all the others who tore their clothes in the OT
6 For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
sins taken seriously, therefore their righteousness was taken seriously
9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
the king knew that their sin was wrong and there is punishment for it, and he and his people repented - they understood the grave consequences of their actions
they had not yet seen the great mercy of God
just like the great mercy that God had upon us
10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
God saw their repentance - just like He saw ours
God had great mercy upon them
even the gentiles - great foreshadowing of things to come
they were given a second chance
the people of nineveh
Jonah
Jonah arose
he went out to the intimidating world to preach God’s Word - he went out there and just did it - even though it was hard
even though he likely thought it was a hopeless mission, we see that it WAS fruitful
it was by trusting God that Jonah delivered the message and nineveh repented
it was by doing and not just saying that nineveh repented
It was by trusting in God that nineveh grieved over their sins and turned from them
it was by trusting in God that Nineveh received and saw God’s mercy
