Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man from ROOF
Mt 9:1–8, Mk 2:1–12, and Lk 5:17–26 describe a healing miracle.
Background: Gadara
· Jesus was asked to leave Gadara for setting a man free from 2,000 demons.
· The power of God scared them!
WHO: a paralytic in Galilee.
· It was witnessed by Pharisees Asking for a Sign, teachers of the Law, men lowering a paralytic, and scribes accusing Jesus of blasphemy.
Mark 2:1 NLT
1 When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home.
Luke 5:17 NLT
17 One day while Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of religious law were sitting nearby. (It seemed that these men showed up from every village in all Galilee and Judea, as well as from Jerusalem.) And the Lord’s healing power was strongly with Jesus.

Teaching brings FAITH – faith brings POWER – power brings HEALING

Mark 9:2 NLT
2 Six days later Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed,

God’s WORKS confirm God’s WORD

Mark 9:3 NLT
3 and his clothes became dazzling white, far whiter than any earthly bleach could ever make them.
Mark 9:4 NLT
4 Then Elijah and Moses appeared and began talking with Jesus.
· Four crazy friends tore a hole in Jesus’ own home!
Razed the roof...
Mark 2:5 NLT
5 Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.”

Faith is a VERB

Bible faith always has corresponding action

Faith is VISIBLE

Jesus saw the faith of the friends

Faith is VITAL

it was faith that brought about the healing

Your faith can help others

· Intercession – THEIR faith healed the man.
· THEIR faith moved Jesus to forgive the man’s sin.
· Some of your closest friends should be your church family!

Sin can bring sickness – but forgiveness can bring healing

· Sin opens the door to the devil, even in the believer’s life.
· the enemy will use this vulnerability as an opportunity to steal, kill and destroy – especially through sickness – see John 10:10.
Mark 2:6 NLT
6 But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves,
Mark 2:7 NLT
7 “What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”
Matthew 9:3 NLT
3 But some of the teachers of religious law said to themselves, “That’s blasphemy! Does he think he’s God?”
HOW: spoken Word – forgiveness of sin
Mark 2:8 NLT
8 Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts?
· God knows your thoughts
· You can fool others, but you never fool God.
· Isn’t it ironic the teachers would not answer Jesus?
· Only religion would call a good thing bad.

A godly heart rejoices in the blessing of others

A godly heart is happy for healings – even if it’s not theirs.
· Notice the difference between Jesus’ attitude and the teachers …
· Jesus did not get mad about the demolition of His home, but the Pharisees were angered by Jesus’ words.
· How sad it is that someone would not be happy that someone was healed.
· Would they feel better if the man remained crippled for the rest of his life?
Mark 2:9 NLT
9 Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’?

Wisdom looks to God for reason

Don’t assume to know the cause for every sickness
· each case stands differently and is unique.
o seeing this man healed by the forgiveness of sins MAY have caused the disciples in John chapter nine to assume the man born blind was a result of his personal or his parent’s sin.
o The man was not blind due to sin, but it seems to be in this case, the paralysis was.
o This does not mean that every case of paralysis is caused directly by personal sin.
o It only means that this particular person was..
Mark 2:10 NLT
10 So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said,
Mark 2:11 NLT
11 “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”
Mark 2:12 NLT
12 And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!”
· Healing is to bring glory to God! – a pattern of praise
Matthew 9:8 NLT
8 Fear swept through the crowd as they saw this happen. And they praised God for giving humans such authority.
Luke 5:26 NLT
26 Everyone was gripped with great wonder and awe, and they praised God, exclaiming, “We have seen amazing things today!”

Personal Challenge: Forgive and be forgiven

· Do you have unconfessed sin?
· Have you forgiven others?
· While we cannot forgive the sins of others against GOD, we CAN forgive the sins of others toward US!
Lord’s Prayer – forgive us our debts, as we forgive others.
Matthew 6:12 (NLT)
12 and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
Forgiving others could help their healing!
find four friends who will do anything for you!
BE a friend.
