The author of Hebrews is anonymous. Anonymous means we don’t know who wrote it.
Origen, early church father, (185-253) famously said “God only knows” the author of Hebrews.
Anonymous means we don’t know who wrote it, only God does.
The audience is first century Hellenistic (Greek cultured) Jews who have professed faith in Jesus.
o They are facing mounting religious and social pressure from their countrymen.
o They also feel the pagan pressure of the Roman empire.
o All of the pressure and opposition was causing some to give up and return to Judaism and Old Covenant living.
The author reassures them that Christ is superior in every way to Judaism and there old way of life.
He exhorts them that genuine faith is transformational, overcomes any persecution by enduring to the end.
