The Anonymous Sermon

Notes
Transcript
The author of Hebrews is anonymous. Anonymous means we don’t know who wrote it.
Origen, early church father, (185-253) famously said “God only knows” the author of Hebrews.
Anonymous means we don’t know who wrote it, only God does.
The audience is first century Hellenistic (Greek cultured) Jews who have professed faith in Jesus.
o They are facing mounting religious and social pressure from their countrymen.
o They also feel the pagan pressure of the Roman empire.
o All of the pressure and opposition was causing some to give up and return to Judaism and Old Covenant living.
The author reassures them that Christ is superior in every way to Judaism and there old way of life.
He exhorts them that genuine faith is transformational, overcomes any persecution by enduring to the end.

Who is Jesus?

Jesus is the Son of God Hebrews 1:1-5

Jesus is Eternal Hebrews 7:23-25

In the order of Melchizedek (Gen 14:18, Ps 110)
Hebrews 5:9–10 ESV
9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 7:3 ESV
3 He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.
Hebrews 7:23–25 ESV
23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

Jesus is Perfect

Jesus offered a perfect sacrifice

Why should I follow Jesus?

Don’t follow the OT prophets (1:1-3).
Don’t follow the angels (1:4-14).

What happens if I...

Ignore Jesus

You will miss the blessings of forgiveness, joy, hope, and love that are found in Him.
Hebrews 2:1 ESV
1 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.

Don’t believe in God

Your heart will be evil and unbelieving and you will be unforgiven.
Hebrews 3:12 ESV
12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.

Stop growing

You will miss the reward and what God has promised.
Hebrews 10:35–36 ESV
35 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.

Lose faith

Faith - Is believing trust (reliance, dependence) upon God’s nature, character, plans, and promises revealed in scripture and through the Spirit.
You will lose your hope of eternal realities.

Reject discipline

You will be resisting God’s love and goodness.
Hebrews 12:10-11
Eph 6:1-3
Proverbs 4

Neglect these warnings.

You will miss the kingdom of God.
Hebrews 12:25; 12:28-29

What story does the Bible tell? The kingdom of this world becoming the kingdom of our Lord. (Rev 11:15)

How is the story of the kingdom told? Through the covenants.

What is a covenant? A relationship that God establishes with us and guarantees by his word. (Deut 29:10) “You are standing today all of you before the LORD your God . . . so that you may enter into the sworn covenant of the LORD your God, which the LORD your God is making with you today.” (Deuteronomy 29:10)

What covenants tell the story of a promised kingdom? The covenants with Adam, Noah, Abraham, Israel, and David.

What covenant marks the arrival of God’s kingdom? The new covenant in Christ. (Hebrews 9:15)

“[Christ] is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.” (Hebrews 9:15)

Can anyone know God apart from the new covenant in Christ? No. We can know God and understand his word only through Jesus.

“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5)

“For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away.” (2 Corinthians 3:14)
