I. What is the most famous trial of the last 100 years?

II. The three most important words in any trial are: innocent, guilty, and free.

III. The place is Pontius Pilate’s Judgment Hall.

IV. Jesus is innocent and read Matthew 27:18-19 “For (Pilate) knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.”

V. Barabbas is guilty and read Matthew 27:16 “And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.”

VI. We also are guilty like Barabbas. We’re all born “dead in transgressions and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). We are “lost.” (Luke 19:10) “Prone to wander, Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love.” We are “blinded by the god of this age” (2 Corinthians 4:4), and “hopeless” (Ephesians 2:12). Our finest deeds are “rubbish” or garbage (Philippians 3:8) and “unclean rags” (Isaiah 64:6). Just call us “Barabbas.”

VII. Sin is the big problem for all of us. Read Isaiah 53:6 “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” and Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death”.

VIII. Barabbas was set free by Pilate in Matthew 27:20-21 “Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.”

IX. We are set free, too, by Jesus our substitute and Psalm 146:7 “The Lord sets the prisoners free;” Galatians 5:1 “For freedom Christ has set us free” and Revelation 1:5 “Jesus loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood”.

X. The three most important words in any trial are: Innocent, guilty and free.

XI. What is the most life-changing of the three? That’s easy! Free! John 8:36, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” That is us! Like Barabbas! By faith, forevermore, free! Amen.
