The Temptations
Jesus was led by the Spirit in the wilderness to be tempted by Satan
the temptations are not the subject of this morning
but the being full and leading of the Holy Spirit
we have looked in the past of being filled with the Spirit
how the Spirit takes up residence in us
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him. You know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
we are sealed by the Holy Spirit
In Him, you also, after listening to the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
we have a command to be filled by the Holy Spirit
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
we saw earlier the baptism with the Holy Spirit
makes us alive, born from above
“I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. And the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
we have been made righteous
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
we are the body of Christ
Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.
Sons of God
by predestining us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,
See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we would be called children of God; and we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
the baptism with the Holy Spirit makes us Christians
So what does all this have with the temptations of Jesus
this is what we are concentrating on this morning
Jesus as a human endured all of the of the temptations that we do
Adam was the son of God
the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.
created without the sin nature /not a slave to sin
but did sin when tempted by Satan
Jesus born without sin nature and going to be tempted by Satan
Jesus was filled and led by the Spirit
and what does that mean for us
what does being filled have to do with our temptations
read Luke 4 1-13.

lets look at being filled/controlled
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,

The Holy Spirit controlled his emotions and words = be a witness
But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him,
and said, “You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the straight ways of the Lord?
Paul controlled by the Holy Spirit = defended the gospel against an enemy
Elymas controlled by Satan was trying to derail the gospel
who or what controls your life?
turn to Acts 4 36.
Ananias and Sapphira saw the attention that Barnabas recieved
so they became envious of the publicity
so they said lets do the same thing
so satan took the opportunity to temp them with having their cake and eating it too

A&S was filled with jealousy/ envy
Jesus said you are either with me or against me
you either love me or love the world
remember we are not slave to sin anymore
we can say no, we have the power- the Holy Spirit
Satan filled their heart to lie
they gave him permission when their heart was empty of the Holy Spirit
their heart was susceptible to the lies of satan
and when it came they thought it was a good Idea
James tells us about the conception of sin
But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.
Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully matured, it brings forth death.
Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.
this person was full of lust/desire to do this sin
if you full of one thing you can’t be full of something else
Jesus was led out to the wilderness to be tempted by satan
Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit and He was not enticed to sin
His desire was to please the Father
His mission was to save His people from their sins

turn to Galatians 3 3
walking in the Spirit is being controlled by the spirit
being full of the spirit
walking in = is a way of life
Paul is chastising us...I mean the Galatians
they started the christian life by faith
the baptism with the Holy Spirit
the Spirit gave new life
the Spirit joined us with Jesus on the cross
now their lifestyle is by the law not grace
now they are trying their best to please God
V 5 by hearing and faith
chapter 5 V 16 - 21 the works of the flesh
the sinful desires that want to fill us
lets look at Ananias and Sapphira
they owned the land it was theirs to do with as they pleased
they sold the land and gave a portion of the sales to the Church--- very commendable no sin in that
their work of the flesh is the lie told that all of the proceeds were given
the work of the flesh was the envy that came when they wanted the recognition of doing a great sacrificial work
they did something good but with a lie and God killed them on the spot
showing us how bad our sin is
so how do we walk in the spirit V 16
we need to be in the word Jesus responded to each temptation by quoting scripture
Gal 3 told us to live by faith in what we hear
David ps 119 tells us that He hides God’s word in his heart so he wont sin against Him
if we don’t hear from God in his word, how can we have faith in it?
V 22 fruit of the spirit when we walk in the spirit
when we are full of the Spirit
Contrasting the fruit of the flesh
Gal 3 Paul tells us were saved by faith
the good news was proclaimed
as a result there was ..
repentance and faith trusting in Jesus for salvation
here in 6 its the same way
we hear God’s word
and apply by faith
So how does it happen/ look like
our trust has to be in Jesus
our trust has to be in God’s word
what is said about sin
how we are not slaves of sin any more
and there is no temptation that is to much for us to bear
so when we encounter a temptation do something like this
acknowledge that you are being temped to sin
tell the Lord that you are being tempted
you don’t want to sin
In James you tell us that if we draw near to you and resist the devil that he will flee
I want to draw near to you.
you told us in Hebrews that you will never leave me nor forsake me
I am trusting in you to deliver me from this temptation
the fulness of the Spirit will bring us through this trial
If Ananias and Sapphira would have done this then they probably would not be in the book of Acts
Or maybe something is not going the way in which you have hoped
you are getting frustrated at the circumstances that is keeping you from your goal
you are being filled with anger, joy is out the window, patience has been kicked to the curb
the fruit of the spirit is is rotting on the ground
again
we have to acknowledge what is happening
pray and say you Lord are sovereign over the universe
you are in control of this situation
things are this way because you have allowed it to be this way
I am going to put my trust in Jesus no matter what the outcome will turn out to be
then the peace that passes all understanding will come over us
and we will be full of the Spirit
the circumstances have not changed but you have
What are you filled with?
you should be filled with the spirit
is it time for a change?i
is it time to repent? and change what you are filled with
