WE
I got to thinking- what are the most epic intros?
Creed
John Cena, Michael Jordan’s Bulls
Every football team ever- running through inflatables, fog and loud music, lasers and light shows, etc. etc. etc.
General idea- the better the person/team introduced and more significant their prowess, the more impressive the introduction and walk-in
Today, we are going to be looking at Jesus’ *intro, walk-in* into Jerusalem
Make no mistake- He was coming in for victory. But He didn’t come as a conquering general or a flamboyant boxer. He came in as the Prince of Peace.
But there was an unexpected way by which He carried Himself. He came triumphantly in humility.
What does triumph mean?
What does humility mean?
Are the two alike or different?
GOD
VICTORY OF THE LOWLY
The triumphal entry
Jesus gives His disciples instructions to prepare for His grand entry (1-6)
Why didn’t Jesus just walk into town?
It wasn’t simply about His arrival. It was more about how He arrived.
Jesus was looking to communicate something by His entry into Jerusalem.
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
He rode on a donkey to symbolize peace. Isaac, a type of Christ, rode a donkey on the way to the sacrifice. God’s blessing on His people (Genesis 49:10-12). Enter into rest of faith. Prevention of bloodshed (Genesis 33:8). God used a donkey to speak judgment! Jesus was the burden bearer who came to save.
Jesus welcomes and encourages adoration as the Messiah (7-11)
Image putting down your best jacket that mama bought you for a donkey to come trample over. Maybe urinate and defecate on it as it goes.
Everything you do can be an act of worship.
How strange is it that these same people … should, about five days after, change their hosannas for, Away with him! Crucify him! Crucify him! How fickle is the multitude! Even when they get right, there is but little hope that they will continue so long.” (Clarke)
People are fickle, huh? Always changing their minds?
Keep on Him. Remain stayed on Him.
YOU
Important question: Who is this?
Who is this?
I ask you: Who is this?
WE
He is the victorious Christ. The Son of God.
He is the humble Messiah, who came lowly as a servant.
How did His lowliness lead to victory?
identified with mankind. He came as compassion, not as a conquerer. His way of conquering is the transformation of love. He didn’t come to be served, but to serve. Conquering would take place inside out.
Prepare the way of the LORD.
Prepare your heart. You might be fickle on many, many things- but will you find in Him stability and steadiness.
