KJV Master Study Bible: Notes The Gospel according to Luke

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO

LUKE

Life’s Questions

Who can we accept into God’s church?

Who is the Holy Spirit?

What is my mission?

God’s Answers

Probably about A.D. 65 God called a Gentile doctor to research and write two books about the mission Jesus left behind: Luke and Acts. Luke is a gospel seeking to show Gentiles and social outcasts their place in God’s kingdom led by God’s Spirit. Luke showed cultured Gentiles why they should repent and follow a Jewish teacher and what changes it meant for their lives when they did. He also shows the kingdom present and the kingdom coming.

Luke shows: Jesus fulfilled the expectations of Judaism (and the mission of the prophets but was rejected (1–4); Jesus’ carried out His mission in faith, love, and forgiveness (5–7); God’s kingdom offers awesome power to people of any social class who will believe but demands commitment unto death (8:1–9:50); the kingdom involves faithful ministry and witness to all people (9:51–13:21); the kingdom has surprising entrance requirements of repentance, total allegiance, and humble trust (13:22–19:27); Jesus exercised the authority of the divine king in face of rejection, betrayal, and death (19:28–22:6); Jesus died as the true Passover Lamb (22:7–23:56); Jesus’ resurrection is the gate to faith and mission (ch. 24).

Luke invites all people to accept Christ’s admission standards and join in His mission for all people, especially the poor and outcast.

Be Thankful

11 Jesus was traveling to Jerusalem. He went from Galilee to Samaria.

12 He came into a small town, and ten men met him there. They did not come close to him, because they all had Leprosy.♦

13 But the men shouted, “Jesus! Master! Please help us!”

14 When Jesus saw the men, he said, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”While the ten men were going to the priests, they were healed.

15 When one of them saw that he was healed, he went back to Jesus. He praised God loudly.

16 He bowed down at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. (He was a Samaritan.)

17 Jesus said, “Ten men were healed; where are the other nine?

18 This man is not even one of our people. Is he the only one who came back to give praise to God?”

19 Then Jesus said to the man, “Stand up! You can go. You were healed because you believed.”
