16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Here we are faced with the death of SUBMISSION to what or Who?

Thus we must always make JESUS our ultimate FOCUS

KEEPING YOUR FOCUS ON JESUS CHRIST
1.KEEPING YOUR FOCUS ON JESUS CHRIST
1.KEEPING YOUR FOCUS ON JESUS CHRIST
The Word of God reveals that Jesus Christ is our creator, savior, life-sustainer and judge.
The Word of God reveals that Jesus Christ is our creator, savior, life-sustainer and judge.
We should keep our focus on him. However, many are hindered from focusing on Jesus Christ as their Lord because of the sinful attractions of this world (1 John 2:16).

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
But those of us who are followers of Jesus Christ should focus primarily on glorifying him, and not on things of this world and self-elevation (John 3:16; Colossians 3:2).
But those of us who are followers of Jesus Christ should focus primarily on glorifying him, and not on things of this world and self-elevation (John 3:16; Colossians 3:2).
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
2.FOCUS ON JESUS CHRIST AS CREATOR
2.FOCUS ON JESUS CHRIST AS CREATOR
God made all things through his Son Jesus Christ (John 1:1-3; Hebrews 1:2: Genesis 1).
God made all things through his Son Jesus Christ (John 1:1-3; Hebrews 1:2: Genesis 1).
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
“For by him all things created, that are in heaven and earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by and for him” (Colossians 1:16).
“For by him all things created, that are in heaven and earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by and for him” (Colossians 1:16).
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

The biblical Word of God says, all have sinned an come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
The biblical Word of God says, all have sinned an come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
And the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).
And the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten divine Son.
For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten divine Son.
And whoever repents and believes in Jesus Christ should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16; Philippians 2:6-8; Acts 2:38).
And whoever repents and believes in Jesus Christ should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16; Philippians 2:6-8; Acts 2:38).
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
4.FOCUS ON JESUS AS SUSTAINER OF All THINGS
4.FOCUS ON JESUS AS SUSTAINER OF All THINGS
The Lord Jesus Christ, who created all things, and purged our sins by his atoning blood on the cross, upholds and sustains all things by the word of his power (Hebrews 1:3).
The Lord Jesus Christ, who created all things, and purged our sins by his atoning blood on the cross, upholds and sustains all things by the word of his power (Hebrews 1:3).
3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
Without him we can do nothing–For we live, move and have our being in his power ( John 5:5 ; Acts 17:28 ).
Without him we can do nothing–For we live, move and have our being in his power ( John 5:5 ; Acts 17:28 ).
5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Did Jesus receive thirty-nine (39) lashes from the Romans?
Did Jesus receive thirty-nine (39) lashes from the Romans?
Leading up to His crucifixion, Jesus was beaten and flogged by the Romans ( Matt 27: 24-31 ; John 19:1 ).
Leading up to His crucifixion, Jesus was beaten and flogged by the Romans ( Matt 27: 24-31 ; John 19:1 ).
24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.
28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
However, we cannot say for a fact how many lashes He received because it is not explicitly stated in the Bible.
However, we cannot say for a fact how many lashes He received because it is not explicitly stated in the Bible.
In fact, the concept of giving someone no more than thirty-nine lashes is Jewish in origin, not Roman.
Looking back to the Old Testament, Deut 25:3 instructs the Israelites that a criminal should receive a maximum of forty lashes as punishment, "not more, lest, if one should go on to beat him with more stripes than these, your brother be degraded in your sight."

3 Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee.
This caused the Jews to adapt the method of giving a criminal no more than thirty-nine lashes, so that they may not risk breaking this commandment.

We know that in New Testament days, giving thirty-nine lashes was still common practice among the Jews, because the apostle Paul accounts being given thirty-nine lashes by the Jews multiple times. He writes: "Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one" ( 2 Co 11:24 ).
However, Jesus was crucified by the Romans, so there is no reason to believe they would follow a Jewish disciplinary tradition just because Jesus was Jewish.

24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.

We do know that Jesus was not to be killed by the beatings He received because His ultimate death was to come by crucifixion.

So, the scourging was a precursor to the crucifixion. It was not supposed to kill Jesus but to torture Him.
Jesus came to the earth with a purpose: to provide salvation to the whole world.

Through Jesus' suffering and crucifixion, "the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all" (Isa 53:6; see also John 14:6; Titus 2:11).

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned every one to his own way; And the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
We thank God for His grace and mercy, and the sacrifice of Jesus that provided our atonement: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16).

“He said to them, „But who do you say that I am?” (Matt. 16:15).
Karl Barth said that Christology is the touchstone of all theology. He wrote in his Dogmatics in Outline, “Tell me how it stands with your Christology, and I shall tell you who you are.” Fundamental to the Faith.
The doctrine of the person and work of Jesus Christ is fundamental to Christianity.
Christianity is itself a revealed religion.
Christianity is itself preeminently a redemptive religion, a “sinner’s” religion.
God has determined to manifest His glory in human history by means of rescuing ill-deserving sinners from their guilt and judgment and bringing them to Himself.
This God-glorifying saving work is carried out and centers upon His Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
It may be summed up in Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 5:19, “God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself.”
“Jesus is not presented as the first Christian or as the Founder of the Christian Religion.
As the Lamb brought to the slaughter and the Lord at the right hand of God, as the Suffering Servant of Jehovah and the Prince of Life, He is the sum total of all that Christianity means” (McDonald, 65).
Upon distinguishing Jesus from every other “founder” or “first confessor” of the various human originated religious systems, Herman Bavinck pointedly wrote, “Christ is Christianity itself; He stands not outside of it but in its center; without His name, person and work, there is no Christianity left.
In a word, Christ does not point out the way of salvation: He is the way itself.” How are we to think of Him? As He is revealed in the inspired Scriptures.

15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
13 And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.
43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:
5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,
9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)
37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:
39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
“Believed on in the world.” Trusted and Embraced (Acts 5:14; 8:12, 37; 11:21; 13:48; 14:1; 16:14, 34; 17:12; 18:8; 19:18).

14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)
12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
21 And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.
48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.
1 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed.
14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.
8 And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.
18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
“Right from the start, historic Christianity has conceived the Christhood of Jesus in terms of His being the divine person whom the Father sent from heaven to become incarnate, to serve our race as prophet, priest, and king under conditions of humiliation, culminating in a redemptive death, then to rise, return to glory, and rule directly over the cosmos on His Father’s behalf, imparting salvation to those for whom He won it, and thus creating and building up His church, until He reappears for resurrection, restoration, and retribution on judgment day” (J. I. Packer, The Glory of Christ).

Another has said that “the personal glory of the Lord Jesus is to the Bible what the sun is to our planet,” that what the Church of God requires collectively and needs individually is a “frequent repose and devout meditation within the hallowed temple of the Redeemer’s glory.

The more closely we contemplate it, and the more transforming and assimilating its influence upon our minds, the better we shall be fitted--and the more successful will be our labors--to go forth and invite others to its study and win them to its love” (Winslow).

It is a conforming contemplation. “But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory” (2 Cor. 3:18).

18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

It is a comforting contemplation (cf. Heb. 3:1).
1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
It is a consecrating contemplation. In 2 Corinthians 4:4 Paul refers to the gospel as “the gospel of the glory of Christ.” This is one of the distinctive marks of a Christian, that he “sees” glory in Christ, Christ is all-glorious to Him (cf. Phil. 3--all things loss in view of Christ; Heb. 12:2-3).

4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe.
2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.
3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:
5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;
6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.
16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.
17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.
18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)
20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
It is a constraining contemplation.

We shall be partakers of glory. This glory of the Lord Jesus Christ is multifaceted.
Like Joseph’s robe it is variegated.

19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
III)DEATH OF SUBSTITUTION Matt 27:32-56
III)DEATH OF SUBSTITUTION Matt 27:32-56
32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.
33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
36 And sitting down they watched him there;
37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.
