The Prophecy of the Garment

1. My Education
a. I attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
i. One class stood out among all the others.

Systematic Theology.

iii. Theology is the Study of God.
iv. This class taught me that all of scripture is interwoven.
v. There is nothing in the bible by mistake or accident.
vi. It reinforced a solid foundation commitment to the true of scripture.
2. Here is a great example.
a. Genesis 3:15
i. Genesis 3:15 (NLT) — 15 And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”
Genesis 3:15 NLT
And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”
ii. That passage is fulfilled in this passage.
iii. John 19:16–18 (NLT) — 16 Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus away. 17Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha). 18 There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them.
John 19:16–18 NLT
Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus away. Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha). There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them.
iv. This was war.
v. Every passage in the bible points to this event.
b. Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection is the fulfillment of all of scripture.
i. Everything after the cross points back to the cross.
ii. Romans 12:1 (NIV) — 1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Romans 12:1 NIV
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
c. Just is the crucifixion itself is full of prophecy.
i. Prophecy is fulfilled in the garment. (Ps 22:18)
ii. Prophecy is fulfilled in the drink. (Ps 69:21)
iii. Prophecy is fulfilled in the bones. (Ps 34:20)
iv. Prophecy is fulfilled in the piercing of His side. (Zech 12:10)
God:

Prophecy of the Garment

a. They gamble for his clothes.
i. John 19:23–24 (NLT) — 23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes among the four of them. They also took his robe, but it was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. 24 So they said, “Rather than tearing it apart, let’s throw dice for it.” This fulfilled the Scripture that says, “They divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing.” So that is what they did.
John 19:23–24 NLT

So they said, “Rather than tearing it apart, let’s throw dice for it.” This fulfilled the Scripture that says, “They divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing.” So that is what they did.
b. The prophecy is truly astonishing.
i. Psalm 22:11–18 (NLT) — 11 Do not stay so far from me, for trouble is near, and no one else can help me. 12 My enemies surround me like a herd of bulls; fierce bulls of Bashan have hemmed me in! 13 Like lions they open their jaws against me, roaring and tearing into their prey. 14 My life is poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax, melting within me. 15 My strength has dried up like sunbaked clay. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You have laid me in the dust and left me for dead. 16 My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and feet. 17 I can count all my bones. My enemies stare at me and gloat. 18 They divide my garments among themselves and throw dice for my clothing.

Isaiah 53:6 NLT
All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all.
iii. Lift your voice with shouts of praise.
iv. You deserve the very pits of hell.
v. You deserve to live there with the devil and demons.

BUT GOD SO LOVED YOU.

i. 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NLT) — 14 Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14 NLT
Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.
