This do ye in remembrance

“Nine-year-old Charlie was asked to say the blessing for the Thanksgiving meal. Charlie was always the polite one of the boys. Billy was the mischievous one. Charlie began his prayer by thanking God for his family and his friends, naming them one by one. Then he began to pray for the food. He called every item by name: the green beans, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, corn, bread pudding, the apple sauce, dinner rolls, the pecan pie, and the chocolate cake.
Then he began to pray about the turkey. He prayed, “That turkey looks so juicy and good. Thank you, mom, for preparing it. Thanks for the car that brought the turkey home from the grocery store. And for the man at the market who bagged the groceries and put them in the car. And thanks for the meat department worker that put the turkey on the shelf, for the worker who took the turkey off the truck, the driver of the truck who brought the turkey from the meat packaging company, for the ones who cleaned the bird and wrapped it up, for the farmer who raised the turkey.”
Charlie paused. “Have I left anyone out?” he said . By now, the whole family was wondering when his prayer would end. They were hungry and ready to eat.
Just then Billy, Charlie’s mischievous brother, blurted out sarcastically, “How about God!”
How many times do we do the same thing?
Forget God in the frivolities of life
Stress?
Anxiety?
Surrounded by blessing?
Sickness?
That story may seem silly but as we prepare to take the Lord’s Supper we are called to remember.
While we turn to Luke 22, I remind you that the events in this passage come at the end and culmination of Jesus’ three years of ministry. He is eating and celebrating the Passover with 12 of his closest friends, students, and disciples. They have been shoulder to shoulder, traveling together for the past three years. They were the side of Jesus as he taught, healed, and did miracles. They were the ones who stayed around after so many had left. There they sat celebrating and remembering God’s deliverance of Israel from slavery, not knowing that an even greater work of emancipation was soon to come.
The main imperative found in out text is “ this do ye in remembrance”
Remembrance: The action of reminding ones self of, To call to mind
Jesus issues this instruction to us.
Lord’s supper is a time to remember
to focus on the main thing
Luke 22:14-20 “14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.
19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.”
The Exhortation to Remember
The Exhortation to Remember
Jesus commands them to take this supper in his remembrance.
Jesus understood that you will behave and do according to that which you are mindful of.
Look what God has to say about being mindful
Deut 4:9
9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons;
Psalm 103:2
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all his benefits:
Deut 4:23
23 Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the Lord thy God hath forbidden thee.
Belief will affect behaviour
Mindfulness will determine movement
Why remember?
A failure to remember will lead to:
Spiritual Apathy- Romans 12:11
11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
Relational Delay- 2 Sam 12:9
9 Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.
Fear
Sin
Causes of forgetting
Easy Living- Deut 6:10-12
10 And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, 11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; 12 Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
Idolatry- Judges 8:33-34
33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god. 34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
money?
people?
stuff?
substance?
As humans we are so prone to forgetting. Forgetting the main thing. Jesus is trying to get us to remember! He wants us to recall.
Recall what?
What awaits him
The Elements
The Elements
Luke 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Let us observe and remember what Jesus endured for us.
Jesus who was perfect and innocent, who had only done good and right, whose words were true and gracious is forced to stand trial. He is sold out by one of his disciples and friends. He is made to stand before the Governor Pilate. As he concludes his trial with Pilate all that could be said about him was “I find no fault in him” (Luke 23:4) . Pilate could find no wrong in him, Jesus was innocent. Only there because of accusations, Jesus was innocent yet he didn't defend himself. Despite the innocence of Christ, masses of his kinsmen and people are still calling for his crucifixion. The masses chant “Crucify him!”. Pilate turns him over. Jesus was then:
4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
His Body
His Body
He gives them bread to symbolize his body
Remember the body that was given for you
Notice it’s given
not taken but rather sacrificed
Romans 5:8
8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
In the hours to follow Jesus will be:
Lied against- Matthew 26:59-60
59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; 60 But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,
Mocked- John 19:23
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
Abandoned by his friends and disciples- Matthew 26:56
56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
Scourged- John 19:1
1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
Smote with reeds(Mark 15:19)
19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.
Clubbed
Punched(John 19:3)
3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
Spat upon(Mark 15:19)
19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.
The Case for Christ: A Journalist's Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus 11. The Medical Evidence: Was Jesus’ Death a Sham and His Resurrection a Hoax?
A third-century historian by the name of Eusebius described a flogging by saying, ‘The sufferer’s veins were laid bare, and the very muscles, sinews, and bowels of the victim were open to exposure.’
Is 52:14
14 As many were astonied at thee; His visage was so marred more than any man, And his form more than the sons of men:
Mounted to a cross- Luke 23:33
33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
Nailed
According to Psalm 22 bones out of socket
His Body broken
Darkness
Temple veil rent
His life given and body broken
Why did he do this?
Luke 22:19 - For you
19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
His body was broken for us
Allow me to remind you that this broken body:
Was the perfect sacrifice for every sin you’ve ever done
Hebrews 7:27
27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.
It was our sin that he was bearing
1 Peter 1:24
24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
The catalyst for your sanctification
Hebrews 10:14
14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
Your hope for future life begins with his death
2 Timothy 2:11
11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:
Don’t forget the body. Remember who gave it up for you. Remember what it does.
His Blood
His Blood
After the bread is given Jesus then brings up the cup.
Luke 22:20
20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
This cup is picturesque of the Blood of Jesus
- Notice what Jesus has to say about his blood.
- Shed- poured out
-For you
-Luke 22:33 33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. 34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. 35 And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. 36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, 37 And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.
Hours later as he is still hanging there. The sky darkens, the ground trembles, and the veil in the temple tears.
Luke 23:44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. 46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
There Jesus hung, forsaken, destitute, dead, and his blood shed. ALL FOR US
The Significance of this is massive!
Since the fall of man atonement (covering of sin) required blood
Adam & Eve a lamb died
Noah sacrificed animals
Leviticus- God institutes their priesthood to handle BLOOD sacrifices
daily
over and over
never done
Then one day the prophet John the Baptist sees Jesus and makes this statement
John 1:29
29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
the blood of all the sacrifices could never do what Jesus’ blood does
The priest and OT God followers made sacrifices continually but look what is said about the blood of Christ!
Hebrews 10:4
4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
A perfect final blood offering!
His atonement for our sins is permeant
Heb 10:12
12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
His blood redeems us!
Eph 1:7
7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
His blood cleanses us!
Heb 13:12
12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.
His blood fixes our relationship with God!
Eph 2:13
13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
It is this wonderful blood that Jesus instructs us to remember! This blood that was shed for US!
Remember your savior!
Remember what he’s done for you!
Remember what he paid for you
Can I exhort you from Hebrews 12:1-2
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Remember him!
As you sit in your seats would you remember what Christ has done for you?
At this time I would like to ask Bro. ___________ to pray for the Bread and Bro. _________ to pray for the Cup.
The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 11: 24 that Jesus paused and gave thanks for the bread. “Take, eat, this is my body which was broken for you. This do in remembrance of me” (Everyone eats.)
24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.” (Everyone drinks)
Pray
As you pass your cups to the end of the aisle. Would you commit to remember this week all that Christ has done for you and That he is coming back?
